My kids love Billy on the Street. I find his yelling a bit too much, and not funny.

But thats me.. kids, lawn, shotgun....

I have very mixed feelings on this. Democratizing the medium seems generally bad and will increasingly lead to films being aimed directly at the middle, but maybe one day they will fix The Magnificent Ambersons.

On the one hand fan edits on the more experimental side of the spectrum can provide an interesting and differing perspective on things we already know. On the other hand, they feed into fan entitlement and only endorse dumb shit like this:

That is the long-term problem. No chances, no shocks. Everything retrofitted to keep things the way people want them to be.

The "no Jar Jar" thing is fascinating to me in that it presumes that you have to keep watching the movie and thus changes need to be made to "fix it". Every time a new Star Wars movie comes out, people talk about how they went back and rewatched the old films and that they still hate them. Why keep watching it or why try to fix it? Just discard them; there are thousands of movies coming out every year, and you can get an experience that works better by going that route. I don't watch The Godfather Part III to get frustrated yet again, nor was I too interested in Coppola's new cut.

I won't pretend to not be one of those who goes back to the prequel trilogy, I've done that marathon and in all likelihood, I'll do it again.

The culture of fan entitlement and the growth of fan edits seems to rise of people's inability to be content with their own imaginations. They spend years building a story in their own heads and then when the real thing disappoints there is a frustration that boils over due to not being able to have some sort of real-life relationship to the story they imagined. That ultimately manifests itself in pieces of fan fiction like the fan edit. It's an attempt to bring that imagined story to life. Unfortunately, most fan edits come off as just that, hollow frustrations instead of channeling that imagination into new to interesting stories.

I can't claim to be above the people who create fan edits. I'm definitely guilty of some fan entitled behavior and it'd be easy to find "it would have been better if X happened..." type posts of my own in threads on this site to prove it. I just wish people's imaginations were being used for more creative endeavors. The irony with Star Wars fan edits is of course that Star Wars exists because George Lucas wanted to do Flash Gordon but couldn't get the rights, so he ended up channeling that imagination into something new that became beloved.

It would not surprise me to see traditional DVD extras like deleted scenes, BTS footage, and commentary tracks transition to NFTs in the next few years.

I saw a lot of comments saying that he was most likely only referring to cartoons with that, based on what he was specifically asked and where his expertise lies. Obviously it’s possible that they will get out completely, but it could also be panic over nothing for the moment. Probably will be easier to tell where we’re heading once the Universal partnership for physical media gets under way.

I might still buy a few more blu rays soon though. My sale order just came today after weeks of waiting, kind of wish I had splurged on a few more to save the effort later.

Self-promo opportunity that Shout! has released a shit ton of Warner titles physically in the last few years and we're not stopping physical releases anytime soon.

Yeah I was also going to say that the boutique stores are doing amazing work and only gaining in popularity, so as long as they don’t stop licensing I’m sure things will be ok.

On a Shout note, I’m super excited for The Dead Zone to come. Wish I had pulled the trigger on Pink Panther before it went OOP.
