It really can’t be said enough how shitty the Champions League reform is too.

Not saying they didn’t but aren’t Mundo Deportivo one of the Spanish clubs mouth pieces?

  5. What are the new CL rules and setup?

36 teams, one league, each team play 10 matches. Top 8 go through to last 16. Teams 9-24 play a two legged tie to get to last 16.

Oh and I’m pretty sure two of the spots in it and invite slots so if a big team misses out they’ll just be invited in.

They aren't invite slots but they will work similarly.

    From UEFA's own website:

    -------------------------------------

"How will the four additional spots be allocated?
Qualification for the Champions League will continue to be open and depend on a club’s final position in the previous season’s domestic league competition. The additional four slots available in 2024/25 will be allocated according to three different criteria:

    • Slot one: awarded to a club from the country placed fifth in UEFA’s national association coefficient rankings. Each association's coefficient is based on the results of its clubs’ performances in five previous Champions League and Europa League seasons.
    • Slot two: awarded to the domestic league champion with the highest club coefficient among all other domestic champions that have not automatically qualified for the Champions League’s league stage.
    • Slots three and four: awarded to the two clubs with the highest club coefficients that have not qualified automatically for the Champions League’s league stage, but have qualified either for the Champions League qualification phase or the Europa League/the Europa Conference League (due to start in the 2021/22 season)."
    --------------------------

By these rules, apparently the teams that would have qualified had it started this season would be:

Lille via Slot One due to Frances fifth place coefficient

Slavia Prague via slot two due to being the highest domestic champion

Arsenal via slot three due to being ranked 11th and qualifying for Europa League

Tottenham via slot four, due to being ranked 13th and qualifying for the Europa League

Champions Cup had two pools of 10 and only two games. That’s also a once off I believe. They’re going back to pools of 4 when they can. But similar enough yeah.

Yeah similar enough. Hope they go back to the group format for next season, but who knows.

Thanks for that! I struggled to find anything the specified what the extra slots were in my extensive 30 second google search.

it's still fuck all these teams for entertaining the idea, they don't get points for realizing the PR would be bad a day late

Worth noting they are only “suspending” it really, claiming the CL doesn’t work currently.

Honestly if they wanted to save face they should just have gone with the whole “Fuck UEFA and all these corrupt organisations” angle...

Whilst all this has gone on, the CL just underwent a big change that is a further step towards this anyway.

Put a frog in a boiling pan and they jump straight out. Put it in a mild one and incrementally turn up the heat and they don’t notice until it’s too late.

That Lineker tweet is indefensible tbh. Was so shocked when I saw it, then when he doubled down and said it was sarcasm. So out of touch.

I was trying to describe myself to someone

Lineker has dropped a couple of clangers recently. Aside of the stuff in his personal life I'm not fond of, I generally thought his views about football and some other things were pretty decent. Think he's a toad now.
