My only issue with Damage was the fact that it left a lot to be desired instrumentally. It was just very straightforward. I wouldn't even mind it if there was something more memorable to the album other than the lyrics. I felt like I could see the hooks coming from a mile away on that album. And I know the production is polarizing, but that never bothered me. Appreciation is still one of my favorite JEW tracks. The rest of the album just couldn't live up to that song for me.

You just didn't appreciate the rest of it.

    I'll leave now.

I still like the album. It just didn't have the same replay value to me compared to the rest of their discography. Just so people know the context of my taste/preference: I'm a huge fan of Futures and Bleed American. Chase this Light and Clarity hover a tier below that followed by Invented. Damage is somewhere below that. Still a solid effort. I feel like I nitpicked it so much when I first heard it too. For instance, I love the chorus of Byebyelove. I love the crack of emotion that Jim puts out there in it. It's catchy. But he spends nearly a minute repeating it over and over. I just couldn't appreciate it as much as I wanted to.

I listened to Appreciation on my jog this morning and I think I liked it more than I ever realized. Gonna revisit Damage now. Never really gave it much of a chance after being so initially disappointed by it.

It's a stacked tracklist. "Appreciation," "Damage," "Book of Love," "Please Say No," "How'd You Have Me," and "You Were Good" are all wonderful songs.

After Appreciation, I'd put Damage, I Will Steal You Back, Please Say No, No Never, and Byebyelove as my favs.

Whiole album is really perfect IMO. Pretty much every song destroys me. But You Were Good really hits me. I wouldn't say it's my favorite, but it kills me in the best ways

Damage is SO good, but I'll admit it took awhile to grow on me.

My early favorites were Appreciation, Damage, and Lean, and I was surprised to read that Lean was initially one of the least liked songs around here. I seem to remember Jason posting his initial impressions before Damage came out and really not digging that song in particular. (correct me if I'm wrong.)

I STILL don't like ByeByeLove. It's the weakest track on the record and imo one of their worst overall songs.

Much of their pre-Damage stuff is written in a way that even if I can't fully relate to the subject matter, the songs can at least make me put myself in different situations and feel the music as if I could relate more personally. I don't know if that makes a lot of sense, but I guess I'm saying it's less the subject material and more that I find the songs on that album much less effective.
