I spent 9 months with these guys and they are all fucking mental.

I watched a guy spend an hour toiling away at his loadout. I asked him what he was doing and he goes, "I'm trying to find the best way to secure these tomahawks on my gear. I'm gonna be the first guy to get a confirmed kill in Afghanistan with a tomahawk." I quickly left the room.

It def depends on the type of restaurant and the clientele. I’ve worked at a Cheesecake Factory all through undergrad and grad school, easily being able to pull in $500-600/wk in tips while working only 3-4 shifts. In Western NY, server wage is $7, my check for working 4 shifts is usually like $50ish after taxes but the tips more than make up for it.

It’s kind of crazy with the worker shortage, I googled restaurant worker shortage and it looks like it’s a nationwide problem right now. Did workers really leave the industry en masse after the pandemic? Where are they now?

Probably a combo of 1. Moved on to work that was less contact-intensive/more towards the career they wanted, and 2. Staying home and still collecting UI because they don't feel like it's safe enough to return....and I don't blame them really. The whole point of the UI was to make it so people could stay home and not catch the virus without falling into destitution.

I know here cooks mainly make $10/hr. They can bust their ass and get stressed out, or they can go work at Walmart for $15/hr or Buc-ee’s that just opened for $16/hr. There are better options without the stress now, and I think that’s what everyone has figured out here. Many people I know (myself included) left the industry because they didn’t feel valued by their place of employment or the people we’ve been serving. Also wages are better elsewhere without the stress. I made good money at the restaurant, but it wasn’t consistent enough. I wasn’t happy and my mental health took a serious dive. I just had to make a move that was right for me. Now I build recording equipment and feel like I’m a part of something. I can still pick up shifts at the restaurant if I want, but I don’t see that happening, not yet anyway.

Yeah I mean, every small wage retail job fucking sucks, but if the money isn't THAT much different, it's almost definitely gonna be less work/less stressful than a server job at a restaurant.

My advice to any young folks looking to make decent money in a low stress manual labor job is to find a golf course and work in the pro shop/bag room. Caddying is hard work, but if your course isn't doing that, then you basically get paid to pick the driving range, clean off golf clubs, and wash golf carts. It's easy AF and if you're cleaning clubs, you get tips on top of your hourly wages.

I'd say that was my favorite job, but it probably doesn't beat being the cotton candy guy at the minor league ballpark. That job ruled.

New Hampshire is so far ahead of every other state in terms of getting the 1st dose administered it's crazy. I'm sure part of that has to do with it having an older population, but still.

If you ever participate you might say something to piss some or all of us off, but don't let the responses chase you off. Sometimes we forget that some folks truly are not paying as close attention and thus might not be well versed in some of the...I guess conclusions?...that generally are the consensus in this thread lol. Most of the people in this thread got jaded years ago arguing with right wingers and now I think we all have a general distrust of people acting in good faith when asking questions/stating their opinions:teethsmile::crylaugh:

2022 could be wild....Imagining a scenario where Kemp gets primaried by some fascist nutjob who beats him, and then it's Stacy Abrams vs. Right wing nut job in a mid-term election year with Warnock also on the ballot.
