PSG are just betting on the other horse. When all these ESL clubs come back with their tails between their legs, PSG will be holding a lot more away within UEFA + FIFA as one of the few "loyal" superclubs. They know how this is all going to end.

So say this actually does happen, what happens with the PL and Championship? Would they promote more teams from the Championship to make up for the 6 leaving?

  3. I’ll probably root for Dortmund more if this actually happens. I just have no connection with any of the other English teams.

Pretty sure Watzke has said in the past that if the Super League is successful Dortmund would have to join.

NGL, it's lowkey very funny Spurs are part of a super league considering they have one minor trophy in 30 years.

It’s interesting because the super league makes sense if you Americanize it. Our states are roughly the same as European countries and our sports leagues operate in many ways similar to how the super league would work. Having all the big cities of Europe participating in a league is exactly what the NFL etc would be like if transported.

I’m not saying I support it. But it definitely seems incentivized by capitalistic structure.

Fucking super league. Dunking on my own team here but we have been anything but super in the last 8 years. What right do we, or Arsenal, or Spurs have to do this? If it’s history where are Nottingham Forest or Aston Villa? Surely they have as much “right” to join it.

  11. I don’t understand why the Galaxy’s backline was that high up the field lol

Miami had a 2-0 break away starting at midfield

That's the most insulting part of it for sure. Where are teams like Celtic or Ajax? At least that would add a bit of legitimacy to the whole thing.

Well many of the owners involved are American. No coincidence Glazers, Kroenke, and FSG are front and centre. Football clubs don’t make that much money for their owners at the moment despite how highly they’re valued.

Yeah that was rough. The right back causally stepped up a tad late, too.

Would love a Brian Clough interview on this development...!

  16. These owners are going to try and call the bluff of all the fans who say they won’t support it. I really don’t know how it’ll play out. But there’s no way it’s a positive for the domestic leagues.

Seen a few folks saying they’re taking advantage of COVID screwing the economies. Which makes it all feel so much fouler because they are.

If UEFA can actually, legally enforce whether or not players can play for their national teams if they play for a super league team will be the lynchpin. Players won’t play for a club where they lose the opportunity to go to the World Cup.

Fans of the English 6 based in the UK: would you stop supporting your club if they did this? Genuinely interested.

I suppose if they take this the American style route hardly any of the games will be played in England anyway. That’s what the owners are banking on, surely? Games in America, Asia etc?

It makes me sick to be honest.

Also, if we see United vs Barca every season, doesn’t the magic start to abate eventually? No relegation, the same 12 or whatever teams?

I wouldn’t be shocked if very few of these games are going to take place in the clubs stadiums. These games will be on at times that take advantage of Asian and American fans.

Speaking as someone who watches sporting leagues without pro/rel, big matches still happen and there’s still magic. Some teams just hate each other. Divisional/regional/conference rivalries are pretty strong in all sports.

Yeah I wouldn’t be interested any more. As much as I complain about teams like Burnley, they’ve earned their place. Like the magic of football is anyone can win things. With a super league Leicester winning the league would never happen. Messe Lingard wouldn’t be spanking the whole league under Moyes at West Ham etc. etc.

and I know it’s not just me but it’s much more fun seeing a big club taken down by a minnow than losing against a top team.

like fuck I know teams like Salzburg or Midtjylland are going to win the Champions League but to essentially say nah you lads are never getting the chance again doesn’t sit right with me. Football isn’t and shouldn’t be a closed off sport, there are thousands of teams across Europe that should have the right to have a go based on sporting success, not money.

If this happens I’ll probably root for Villa or Leicester

There is no way I continue any kind of support for Chelsea if they join an ESL. The owner has already caused a fair bit of damage to the domestic game with his "spend to succeed" policy but I think this decision would be much, much worse than that. Those 6 teams essentially become soulless brands rather than football clubs to me because they are, in a sense, cutting their ties with English football and all the history, local communities and fans that shaped those clubs into what they are today.
