As an aside, being a 9th grade teacher, I am convinced that all new slang terms come from the tweens and middle schoolers first. I always hear new slang from the 9th graders, who then keep using those same terms throughout high school, and then any new slang they pick up bleeds in from the new waves of 9th graders. (though the internet means things spread a little differently now)

I don't think swag has been a thing people really say since like 2014 lol

 

YEah I don't think people use it to be "cool" anymore but I still see it get used unironically to just describe like when they get sports team merch or whatever. Like it seems to have made the jump from cool way to describe your clothes/look/style/etc to word used to describe shit that you own lol.

 

The difference is just that “refugees” are people outside the country while “asylum-seekers” are people already in the country. You can bring an asylum claim yourself once you’re in, or you can raise it once you’ve been caught and are in deportation proceedings.

I believe the US (and many if not lost countries) sets a cap on refugees it accepts each year. Idk for sure if that cap or some different cap applies that asylum seekers, but I cannot imagine it does and really hope not. I imagine virtually everyone facing deportation tries to bring an asylum claim (because why not) and if I was a judge I sure wouldn’t want to be like “well you WOULD have a valid claim, but you got picked up by ICE at the wrong time, so bye bye”

So what's the point of the refugee cap then? Did Trump just do it to be a racist POS and now Biden admin is leaving it be? Are we really getting that many overseas refugees right now? I assumed no one wanted to come here because of our COVID issues lol

Not an expert on this at all but I believe the president always sets a cap before every year, but before Trump is was pretty rare that the number of people admitted ever reached that cap

Yeah I assume Trump lowered it so much just in accordance with his general anti-immigrant goal. No idea why Biden would keep it that low outside of just (1) he’s a Dem and that’s what Dems do! or also possibly (2) his admin is balking specifically because the GOP started beating the drum hard about the border crisis the past few months.

I have a hard time buying the idea that refugees would not want to come here just bc we handled Covid bad. Like if you’re a refugee then by definition you’re in a really shitty spot and are looking for any way out lol. If anything that feels more like an excuse the government would use to limit immigration: that letting more people in just generally risks more Covid

 

I'm surprised that isn't the reasoning given as to why they wouldn't increase the cap. It makes more sense to say that they aren't increasing because we are already having covid spread at far too high rates so more people coming into the country could make it worse, rather than the dumb excuses his admin seems to be giving
