To be clear, as the person who posted the Josh manslaughter links, I posted the Reddit link, the news article, and said there are many Josh Woodards, so it may not be him, but sure, go off about throwing accusations around.

Her actual quote doesn't seem bad, but it doesn't have a ton of context. The cover story doesn't even mention the phrase "cancel culture"... but I guess that doesn't get as many page views.

  18. I kinda just want people to stop asking folks for their opinion on cancel culture unless they require them to define it first.

Edit: this isn't specifically about this quote since I haven't read the article, just a frustration I'm having in general lately since everybody talks about "cancel culture" and very rarely are asked to actually define their terms.

Yea it's a little disingenuous to report "THIS IS WHAT ST. VINCENT DECLARES ON cAnCeL cUlTuRe" based on what she said, although I'm still going to be slightly wary of her statements. As I am anyway when individuals make broad statements about "Everyone makes mistakes!" when the topic comes up

  20. Def seems bizarre (read: shitty) for NME to promote it as her stance on cancel culture when she doesn't even use the phrase once. Agreed, not a lot of context there but I don't see anything wrong with those quotes as they're presented

  21. In fact, I can't help but feel like publications using the language for clicks is exactly the kind of thing that makes people NOT take accountability, "cancel culture," whatever you wanna call it, seriously

At this point, "cancelling" has no meaning at all. It's just a click-bait buzz word.

  23. Ah, I was just commenting on the article presented, but I'm clearly missing some context re: her father and the current album cycle lol so I'm probably not the best person to comment further

Cancel culture also just doesn't exist. I wish it did. It'd be nice if people who did horrible things actually faced real consequences for their actions. Doesn't really work out that way though in practice sadly.

"cancel culture" as a concept just isn't defined enough which leads to stupid comments about it. Some people view "cancel culture" as holding people accountable, whereas other people legit think "cancel culture" means like, ruining someone's career because they said a mean thing one time in their life.
