1960 in film.

We have to start somewhere, and since the French New Wave started around this time, here we go.

What are your top three films for 1960? We will keep a running tally and eventually have some sort of bracket. For me it would be:

It is strange looking at the list of box office heavyweights, as some of the most critically acclaimed and influential films of all time are atop the list. Psycho is the one that gets so much of the attention, but this was the year that La Dolce Vita and Breathless had their international releases. Breathless changed cinema, but for whatever reason it was never as interesting to me as Pierrot le Fou or Masculin Feminin. La Dolce Vita, on the other hand, is such a monumental film. 8 1/2 is more well-known, but so much of Fellini's evolving style is on display here.

Whats the plan going forward?

 

I was thinking a year every 3 days and then we could have a bracket of the top films.

 

The Apartment is regular Christmas time viewing for me. I was C.C. Baxter in a former life

 

My top would probably be
1. La Dolce Vita
2. Breathless
2. The Virgin Spring

I don’t have strong feelings about the order of 2 and 3.
Psycho has kind of a special place in my film heart. I watched it by myself when I was really young, 10 or 11, and knew nothing about the twist. It was one of the first twists I can remember and it was really effective on me knowing nothing about the plot going in and expecting more of a Jason style slasher.

Glad we're starting with the 60's, I'm going to try and watch something from every year as we go along and there's a bunch of stuff from this decade I want to see. The Virgin Spring was one of the earliest Bergman films I really loved and I was surprised at how much I enjoyed The Apartment, for some reason I thought it would be boring. Psycho is obviously great.

Breathless is the big one from this year that I'm not that into, just left me feeling kind of underwhelmed. It's one I want to revisit at some point though to see if I appreciate it any more now.

psycho was one of the first films i saw that truly wowed me. probably saw it too young/early but oh well.

Watched Le Trou and really liked it. Had some good moments of suspense and a great ending.

watched The Virgin Spring last night. May try to do Le Trou tonight.

 

Wanna use these older year threads as a chance to catch up on stuff I never got around to and/or revisit stuff, but dunno if I'll get a chance before the next thread. As of right now, my Top 1 list for this year is Breathless.

 

Honorable mentions for me would be Peeping Tom (Powell), The Bad Sleep Well (Kurosawa), Psycho (Hitchcock), Wild River (Kazan), The Apartment (Wilder), and The Fugitive Kind (Lumet)

 

Peeing Tom is great, that and Eyes Without a Face would probably round out my top 5 of the year.

 

Big ones I haven't seen are the Virgin Spring and Eyes Without a Face. Oh, forgot to mention Shoot the Piano Player (Truffaut) as well.

 

Folks need to peep The Cloud-Capped Star because I'm guessing the only reason it's not on any other lists is because no one has watched it. Not to pit the only two major Indian filmmakers from that period (in the Western canon) against each other, but imo a stronger film than any I've seen from that era of Ray's work.

 

I added it to my watchlist!

 

I like Ray's 60s stuff but have been meaning to delve into Ghatak as well.
