Yeah absolutely not saying I'm surprised, just noting the additional dimension of shittiness.

Didn't MLK's daughter give Justin her blessing for the stuff on the album and made a statement a few days ago praising it?

That sounds to me like she’s thanking his public support for its appearance on the surface, but likely has not actually listened to the album.

Like, the intro song is actually this:

MLK: Injustice anywhere is a threat to justice everywhere.

    Bieber:
    Maybe I stare too much.
    Maybe not long enough.
Funny how I forget to blink.
But when you let down your hair.
    Dancin' like no one's there.
    I know I'm where I'm s'posed to be.

There isn’t even the slightest resemblance of tact here.

I get what people are upset about, I do, but a large percentage of his fan base probably doesn’t know jack shit about injustice and has likely never heard anything MLK said beyond “I have a dream,” so irrelevant lyrics and subject matter aside, if this album inspires even a tiny fraction of his supporters to research the subject and open their mind to MLK’s teaching, I’m inclined to think that’s a net positive in the end.

That was a long fucking sentence.

I hear that, but I think it’s a positive net for Bieber and his record label. White allies need to do it in ways that doesn’t line their pockets or monetarily benefit them if they want to be credited for doing something good in regards to the subject.

Has he ever once shown any social media support for BLM or any of the racial cop killing cases? Or anything to do with civil rights or injustice for that matter? Genuinely asking cause I don’t believe I ever hear about anything good or positive coming out of him. If his first means of doing so is to tack on MLK speeches to love songs to sell records then he really sucks.

Very good points, and definitely things I hadn’t considered. I agree.

Will this point some people who wouldn't otherwise to read up on more MLK and to that extent civil rights as a whole? Possibly. Did Justin have good intentions for doing this? Probably. Is it still a way to get in the good graces of the public and good publicity as a whole after a botched 2020 album? There's a good chance of that as well.

All of this 100%. At the end of the day though, he didn’t go behind anyone’s back by doing it. He reached out, he got the blessing and that’s that.

Don't remember specifics, but I feel like I've heard a bit here & there about the King family being messy? Either way, I love MLK, but his estate signing off on something means very little to me in whether or not it's good.

Granted, if it weren't Justin Bieber, I also wouldn't think being cringe about social issues & justice automatically falls under "accountability," lol. But, there's plenty of reason to be anti-Bieber, so sure, we can toss this (which I ain't gonna listen to) on the pile, I guess. Dude's way past getting the benefit of the doubt from me.

There’s also the flip side of that - when people seem to brag about never liking an artist or baselessly having bad vibes about them in the first place, before anything bad ever actually comes out about them. Like congratulations, this is indeed all about how you are better than everyone else

I actually just heard this defense from a co-worker who loves country music:

Me: He blatantly called somebody the N-word on camera.

Her: Yeah but he was walking into his house.

I just assume anyone that defends someone using the n-word uses it themselves or wishes they could.

It quickly rounded the corner into talking about his personal life being invaded and how would I look if I were recorded at home. I know, for a fact, I do not say the n-word at home or, uh, ever as a white man. So there’s that.

Japanese Breakfast actually did post about this, so big ups to them. Also Downtown Boys, Ryley Walker, and a few other artists and labels that are part of Secretly have voiced support.
