the Peter Cottontale album is pretty damn good, I agree that he makes the kind of gospel that's easy to enjoy secularly, ya know?

 

So who is gonna watch that for us and report back

 

The setlist is entirely made up of his Christmas songs plus Sunday Candy if that influences any decisions

 

It was fine and somewhat entertaining. There were some weird volume issues with the mix (too low, then too high) and there are two short skits in there that are utterly terrible from my perspective. There’s a few nice spot-the-reference moments. The in-song proselytizing is still grating (and it’s weird to pivot to religious acclamation after a song about fucking your married neighbor on Christmas break), but in the context of holiday songs it’s a little less annoying because the genre is already so saturated with religious references. Chance still has a charming on-screen presence and when he nails that tightrope walk of sentimental/corny (when “Sunday Candy” starts, for example) it’s super effective.

Ultimately I’d say reach for that branded Ralph Lauren live performance from a month ago if you’re trying to get recent Chance live vibes. Had the same warm, fuzzy feelings with better production values and song choices.

 

As well as his song “The Man Who Has Everything”, which is one of the highlights of the performance from my perspective.

 

Sunday Candy is still one of the best songs he's ever made
