Joke sucks. Don't mind her calling netflix out about it. Maybe I'm a petty bish but if I felt like I had a positive working relationship with someone and they had a bad sexist joke at my expense I'd be unhappy. Espesh cause I think that project with them was a fairly feminist project? (Idk haven't watched it yet oop)

to be fair, i mostly agree, but "Netflix" did not have a joke at her expense

that would be like Chris Nolan saying WB made a joke at his expense because of something said in the lego movies

I think artists of Taylor's reach need to understand the influence they wield when it comes to igniting a furor within their fanbases. I totally get why she found the joke offensive and hurtful, but I'm not sure how to square the way she hit back with the level of equally hurtful shit that her fans are now doing on her behalf to anyone involved in that show.

Anyone have any thoughts here? I don't want to say she shouldn't defend herself, but I feel like the toxicity of stan culture is something that needs to be taken into account as well.

  5. I don’t think it needs to be as reductive as an either/or, nothing in Taylor’s statement said anything about the actors at all. That people decided to be assholes to them is also bad, and misplaced anger. (It happened about an Ariana Grande line in a SBTB episode as well.) Taylor’s statement punched up: at sexism and a billion dollar company, I have no issue with her targets. I think secondarily a discussion on how to handle idiotic fans and internet trolls is also important, and if we can solve that then my god would the entire internet and culture be for the better. That’s why I find the second part of that tweet thread, strange, it puts the responsibility of the uncontrollable onto Taylor in an impossible way.

Stan culture is terrible and idk how to even go about dismantling that. If socials had existed in the age of 90s boy bands or the beatles like omg. It's a weird dynamic. Popstars and taylor especially makes fans feel like they're her best friends. She rewards the most dedicated fans by inviting them to her home for secret sessions, mails them gifts, follows their tumblrs, likes their posts, they get to go backstage and meet her mom etc etc. She like curates this dedicated army of super fans who feel a sense of loyalty and family and will do anything for her to notice them and be part of something so they will defend her at all costs. Not just taylor obv but I think she's perfected that art more than like any other major popstar. Eventually that loyalty goes beyond your control and then what?? Even when popstars do speak out I feel like it doesn't stop. It's why celebs should def be mindful of who they "target" but she def seemed to just call netflix out specifically vs a specific writer or actor. Idk what else she could've done in the regard. People say it wasn't netflix who made the joke at her expense but they're probably the "safest" target for her to specify since they're a company and not specific ppl for her fans to harass

Yeah, I don’t know how to solve this particular problem at all, and I don’t think placing all the blame on the artist is justified, but I do wish more artists would talk about it rather than just letting it happen. I think specifically of when Taylor fans sent death threats to the Pitchfork writer who reviewed folklore/posted photos of her house online because they were mad about how it was going to affect the Metacritic score (it received an 8.0.) I don’t recall Taylor ever making a public statement about that (I could be wrong) and I do think there is some level of responsibility that artists have to call out that type of behavior when it happens.

Then again, maybe the fault lies with Twitter for acting like cyber bullying doesn’t exist and doing nothing to police these notoriously bad users.

The problem with punching up at some nebulous entity like Netflix is that stans will find other outlets for their rage. In this case, it was a young actress in the show in question. When artists call out the Grammys, it’s often the other nominees that bear the brunt, as they’re perceived to have “stolen” the big famous artist’s nomination. It’s not exactly the same thing as punching up at Scooter Braun and Scott Borchetta.

Idk, Stan culture is wild and surreal to me and I wish there was a button you could push to make it go away. I know there’s no simple remedy, but I’d love to see something like an industry roundtable of pop stars, PR folks, label execs, etc. where people actually engage with the issue in a thoughtful way.

Huh, the one thing i'm taking from that is that a 22 year old Taylor dated a 17 year old!? That was actually a thing that happened? Bizarre. Hoping there's a bit more to it than that.

He was like 2 weeks from turning 18 and she was 22 and had just had two bad relationships with older men and his family approved, a little weird but she isn't creepy or anything

Grooming has a meaning it sucks seeing people misuse it

Also pretty sure she only “dated” him to get the real estate deal with the Kennedy’s for that historical property she owns lmao

The kennedy kid was also weird because he was a junior in high school, not even a senior. It made it feel like even more of an age gap. And his mother had just died which put him in more of a vulnerable position. It was weird. I wouldn't call her a predator but I side eyed her for it ngl

So that evermore sweatshirt finally came yesterday. The quality is pretty poor and the size of the thing is so weird. Oh well.

i don't wanna make this a thing if it isn't one, like i already feel like i'm overstepping by even bringing this up when it seems no one really wants to. i fully accept and hope there might be a lot more to this than i'm seeing as i'm admittedly not at all educated on it, it was just the one thing that jumped out when i looked through the threads trying to cancel her. but, just removing taylor for a second, i don't think any of those things you've listed are at all valid, tbh. someone having bad relationships with older men doesn't then make it ok to date someone younger?? someone having permission from the family doesn't make it ok? and the "2 weeks from 18" thing seems like a really slippery slope and a way of minimizing the age difference. i am absolutely willing to accept i might have this wrong, like i'm also reading some people claim it was 17 and 19 which isn't much of an issue, there's a lot of conflicting stuff that's hard to wade through due to the stans. but i'm just saying i think those reasons are kinda not good.
