I just meant in 2021 - I think ATL is the band who is firing more on all cylinders and are peaking later in their career, whereas the other two are faltering and tired sounding to me.

Obv AI and Dookie are better and more historic than anything ATL has ever put out.

oh, ok I guess that's easy to agree to. Wake Up Sunshine is a better album than FOAM, yeah. I think Nine and WUS are pretty even though.

New song is okay. Was listening to a few of the new Dropkick Murphy’s songs before it so I chuckled at imagining the chorus is Billy Joe singing in a Boston accent about a shark.

Wow, that's a whole lot of words just to say "Green Day's least commercial album didn't do well commercially"

I’m definitely interested in seeing what their follow up album will be like. Not sure how well Rev Radio did (and I’m too lazy to look it up) but it feels like Green Day hasn’t had a huge album since 21st Century Breakdown which was over a decade ago. Not like it should matter to Green Day at this point in their careers since they can sell out concerts on their name alone. I just really want to love new Green Day music again.

The fact that this person never even mentions the pandemic or the fact that they couldn’t tour the album kind of renders their conclusions moot. It’s definitely a failure by their standards, but there were extenuating circumstances that you have to factor in. I bet the numbers for the last Killers record are similarly weak, and that album was critically well received and adored in the fanbase.

Rock bands don’t have huge albums anymore. The current eco-system is not in their favor. Within that context, Green Day is doing pretty well. Comparing a 2010s Green Day album to a 00s Green Day album is apples and oranges.

Personally, pandemic or not, I don’t think any amount of touring, TV appearances, or promotion could’ve saved the record. In my opinion, it’s bad in almost every way and undoubtably still would’ve been a commercial failure.

I wish I could enjoy it. The fans who do seem to truly love it.

For me, it feels like a collection of ideas that haven't been fleshed out. The whole thing feels lazy and, dare I say, uninspired? I’m not a fan of Butch Walker’s production either.

I wonder what the band’s next move will be. Do they forget FOAM ever happened, or continue in the same direction?

Literally any amount of touring would have helped, if simply by keeping the band visible. Your personal feelings on the album aside, they had a massive tour planned that would have given people reason to check the album out or keep streaming it. Instead, a pandemic happened that basically caused the album to be memory-holed within six weeks of its release.

You’re right, touring would’ve kept the band visible - but the record still would’ve been a commercial failure overall, I think.

Tbf, I don't love it, but to me it was a fun quick listen. I wouldn't take a 45 minutes album of it though.

  23. Personally, I’d argue that it’s their most inspired album in at least ten years. Everything else they’ve done is paint-by-numbers Green Day which, in my opinion, is a very uninspired thing to do. I hadn’t listened to a full post American Idiot Green Day album more than twice each until FOAM came out. It was finally something different from them, a blend of different music styles that I love, and it’s short and sweet which is perfect for repeated listens. I can’t even tell you how many times I’ve listen to FOAM at this point. But yeah, I think there’s only 2 songs on it that I could take or leave. But there’s a good chunk on there that I can’t comprehend aren’t adored by fans of the band. But whatever. Everyone has their own taste and that’s fine. Not everyone needs to love it, but when I see people say this Green Day album is uninspired it makes me chuckle.

I respect that. For me, however, a change in sound or production doesn’t always equate to being inspired artistically. The songwriting on FOAM itself didn’t reflect as genuine.

We’re Green Day fans because we enjoy catchy hooks and great lyrics, which FOAM was severely lacking in. Of course, I want the band to experiment artistically and sonically, but not at the expense of the songwriting.

“I was a teenage teenager full of piss and vinegar,
Living like a prisoner for haters,
I was a teenage teenager, I am an alien visitor,
My life's a mess and school is just for suckers.”

I mean, this is the same band who wrote “Jesus of Suburbia,” “Good Riddance,” and “Welcome
to Paradise.” We know what they're capable of lyrically, and this is not it.

I also found the whole FOAM cycle disingenuous too. The whole “we’re a crazy throwback rock band like The Who!” shtick came off as so cringeworthy.

Again, I’m glad there’s a portion of their fan base who enjoy the record. It’s just not for me.

I can't stand when someone says a song or an album sounds lazy or uninspired, like what? Were you in the room with them while they were recording it? Did they tell you this themselves? Honestly that kind of critique is what feels lazy, used as a catch-all when you can't think of the actual reason why you don't like something.
