Any book you're forced to read won't be as enjoyable it's inevitable

Wait Michelle Williams isn’t even in that anymore?? Now I’m back to hard pass instead of begrudgingly planning to watch.

It’s even already streaming on the same platform where that will air. And Criterion has the TV version along with the theatrical.

This. I've re-read pretty much every book I was assigned in high school and they're all great but man I hated it in high school.

A lot of it depends on the teacher. A great English teacher can really pull a lot of people in.

I had a great english teacher in 8th grade. I think if I had had him or a similar one in high school, I would have maybe been more interested in literature and writing during my teens. Instead, the class just seemed like a chore.

Actually that's partly untrue - I loved Catcher in the Rye.

It absolutely depends on the teacher

  13. I grew up hating reading because my reading comprehension/attention was awful and I'd read 10 pages and realize I was daydreaming that whole time and would have to go back and read it all over again. When I think about picking up a book now, I get really bad anxiety.

And somehow I married an English teacher, haha

Big fan of my college English teachers. My English III teacher was great but not for me. English I I took online in 7th grade because my mother didn't read when signing me up for online classes, so didn't really have a "teacher" in that regard. Wish I did though cause it was basically all Shakespeare and, well shit I was 13. Leaving me to my own devices with that isn't gonna make me appreciate it haha

I have mostly good memories of the books and plays we read in high school. I remember arguing with my AP Literature teacher that Beowulf was the best thing we read that year because it was a story about someone who "gets the job done", after we got through the characters mostly being inactive and questioning everything in Wuthering Heights.

For one year I taught English and the kids hated The Tempest. Shakespeare is a gamble with teenagers, but the department chair picked a bad one to start with.

    My year is stacked:
    Short Stories
    The Body by King
    Fences by August Wilson
    Gatsby
American Born Chinese (new addition this year)

  20. My English teacher in high school inspired me to read outside of school so naturally I went through a short Chuck Palahniuk phase, as one does when they are 16

Two episodes into The Flight Attendant and it’s very cool. I love how it’s shot, all the dream sequences are awesome.

I was a shithead in school so I never really read any of the assigned books, just got by everything with Sparknotes, Wikipedia and educated guesses. I regret that now, I like never read books now because I never got in the habit
