I think he meant he wasn't really familiar with any of their work.

That's crazy that he was almost a member of Dashboard Confessional. Two of the nicest guys in the scene coming together would've been awesome.
Actually in 2007 I saw Dashboard on that small club tour supporting The Shade of Poison Trees, and at one point in the set Fred came out and did a couple songs with Chris. It was so random at the time, I guess it makes sense now!

I had never listened to WYWTB on a really good set of noise cancelling headphones before now and pleasantly surprised how great the production holds up on it for me. Hearing little details I never noticed before

i'm not sure if a lot of people know this but WYWTB doesn't have a single drum fill on the whole record.

Lol never thought of that before but it is kinda true.

Is the drum roll in the beginning of The Union considered a fill? And maybe the start of the outro in One-Eighty

i would say they're just snare rolls and not actual fills.

Is this just something you've noticed or something they've talked about? I just listened to a few random songs and it kinda holds up which is pretty interesting. I'd say there is one just before the chorus of Little Devotional though. Maybe 3 sneaky toms in a row near the end of Bonus Mosh too but on the other 4 or 5 songs I've listened to there's barely anything close besides stuff done purely on the snare. I still like it even if it's not 100% true or even if you made it up as a joke haha.

I know they talked about it during the 20 year tour. Adam talked about how Mark has added fills for their live show so they never know exactly how he is gonna play the songs.

Ah really? I've never heard that before. I love minor things like that. I remember reading a tweet a few years ago that noticed Vampire Weekend put out a single with no hi hat and I was like OH WOW THAT'S SO COOL! I don't think I even listened to the song haha.

there was one band i think i read about in AP magazine over 10 years ago that said they wanted to write an album where all the snares were claps instead. i love when bands do weird, creative things rather than the same formula.

I feel like I vaguely remember reading that Mark hated Fred being overly controlling about his drumming on Louder Now, but don't recall anything about WYWTB. This was years ago.

I feel like Mark had a problem with everyone after John and Shaun haha

From that tell all I think I remember him saying his biggest problem with Fred was he (Mark) was bringing songs and riffs and etc to the group and Fred was basically shooting it all down/treating them like they’re shit/etc.

He does seem to be a common denominator heh. Didn't he angrily threaten to quit if they didn't bring back John and Shaun?

Its all in the AltPress oral history from 2010. i'm sure you can find it online somewhere. Fred did not think mark was a good drummer and was vocal about it.

Which makes the awkward pause in the "12 days of christmas" song even more awkward lol. And sound even more sarcastic.

I remember seeing in an interview that when Fred left, Mark mentioned that he had a party to celebrate the announcement.

The strange thing about it is I do recall Mark saying in the oral history that they didn’t get along and Fred didn’t like his drumming, but in his YouTube channel he has sung Marks praises a bunch. Maybe he’s come around a bit while looking back with hindsight. I do wonder if the age gap in the band had more to do with it than anything. I couldn’t imagine being like 33 years old with kids and sharing a bus with a couple guys in their early 20s, who’s band blew up overnight.

Also if I recall something happened when Mark hurt his back and couldn’t go on a big tour with the band in the Louder Now cycle. either Fred wanted to replace Mark or Mark was paranoid he would be replaced, but I don’t remember which it was

I have that AP magazine still with the oral history. I’ll have to get it out of the box and take photos of it at some point. I’ll have to wait for life to just calm down a little.
