To my ears, Futures is the best sounding rock album I have ever heard. The heavy guitars are chunky without being "metal", the acoustics jangle just enough, the drums are big and open but controlled and punchy, Rick's bass is perfect between the guitars and drums (just listen to Polaris, for Pete's sake!).

Rick is underrated overall. He kills it in Polaris, his bass line in Recommit is dope, and I just listened to 12.23.95 and his bass work there is so cool

Clarity ended up being a slow burn for me. I just kept coming back to it. Something about it was really fascinating and beguiling to me, even though it didn't immediately have the emotional wallop that Futures had on me.

yeah that’s a good way to put that feeling, there’s almost an elusiveness to certain records where I know there’s something there that’s gonna one day “click” for me, and there’s a fascination and an intrigue that comes with that. I’ve had records take literally years sometimes for everything to fall into place, but when that happens there’s really not much else like it— it’s kind of magical.

For me it was going from Static Prevails into the self titled ep on Fueled by Ramen. The shift was interesting to me. I love Episode 4 and felt they were going to go deeper into that vibe at the time.
I always wondered if a lot of people felt "Futures" was their best, pound for pound

I don't really care for Invented or Damages for this reason, but Integrity Blues is the one that reinvigorated my love for them. Songs like Pass The Baby really are in my wheelhouse, and I felt like it was a new kickstart to the tired ol formula overall.

I totally get this. When I was a kid, my grandparents lived in northern Michigan near a ski lodge so we’d go up there to visit them and they taught us to ski. When we got older they moved down state to be closer to family in case of emergencies and it was a bit of a heartbreaker because we all loved how peaceful their house in the woods was for everyone who stayed there. So in my junior year we all took a trip - for the last time - as a family and rented out a little condo at the foot of the mountains for the weekend. That first night I was lying in my sleeping bag on the living room floor while the snow gently fell outside the window overlooking the mountain illuminated by the ski lift lights. I had just recently discovered Mae’s Destination: Beautiful so I put my headphones on and played it low while watching the snow fall. Eventually I fell asleep to Skyline Drive. When I woke up I decided I loved that album. Nowadays if I ever happen to return to it, I’m instantly pulled back to that moment in time and I feel at peace.

Sometimes, those albums that take the longest to click are the most special ones. I had this with Born to Run, where I listened to it probably dozens of times as a kid and teenager before it finally clicked for me as a senior in high school. I think it took that specific life circumstance (nearing the end of one chapter and wondering what comes next) for that album to really mean something to me. When I heard it at the right moment, it was like I was listening to it with new ears.

Whereabouts in northern Michigan? I live up here!

Schuss Mountain in Bellaire! I used to love going there. We’d also head over to Shanty Creek and sled down the hill where we’d go so far so fast that it would take like fifteen minutes to walk all the way back up.

Nice! I did a summer dinner theater show at Schuss Mountain about a decade back. Beautiful spots up that way, especially in the winter.

I'll never forget the first time I heard Clarity in high school. It blew me the hell away. Nothing I've ever listened to since has come close to touching it.

My wife and I actually decided to get away this past August so we could just clear our heads for a bit and we wound up driving through some of my old haunts up that way. There’s a little movie theater in downtown Bellaire my grandma used to take me to and it looked about as quaint as I remember it being. We’d usually try to head up to Mackinaw from there during the summer season so we could ride bikes around the island. God it was so pretty. I hope to maybe do that again when things wind down some day.

I don't get up to Bellaire enough. Kind of a hike for me, but it's a super cool town, for sure. I was just talking with the founder of Short's Brewing Company the other day for a story I'm writing. Love that place.

Have you ever made it up to Traverse City around summertime? Pretty unbelievable time to spend up this way. Crowded, but beautiful.

Yes! My little sister actually lived up there for a few years as a social worker and she also got married at Castle Farms. When I was a kid my grandparents also had a little sailboat (they were kind of nomads) and I’d go out with them as often as possible. I spent a lot of time with them as a kid. Traverse City was one of my favorite places to dock. Michigan is so beautiful.

Nice! TC is my hometown. Grew up here, and moved back a few years ago. We get brutal winters, but it's worth it for the summer seasons.

That’s what my sister used to tell me every winter when she’d send me pictures of the insane amounts of snowfall they’d gotten. If I were to ever move north, it’d probably be a city like that. Much as I love the smaller towns and the quiet, I also start missing the populations after a while. Then again I grew up in the Metro suburbs so that’s all I really know.

We get a good mix, definitely. Easy to get away from the crowds, but especially in the summer, its almost like you're in a big city if you go downtown. And definitely big-city-tier restaurants, breweries, etc.

Man, overseas shipping is a joke. Cost of the ticket and poster for Futures is $50. The shipping is $60. Absolute bullshit.
