Yeah, Wiki says they recorded on tape, I might be thinking of Bleed American

Sounds like that conversation was from a Pass Through Frequency episode. Maybe the one with Mark Hoppus talking about Trombino and how he was ahead of the curve with digital or something.

I am not telling you your ears are broken, I am not telling you that you have to like the album or think it is the world’s most perfect album. I am pushing back against people making qualitative statements that are objectively not true. it is not a poorly produced record, it is not rough or bad sounding, it really isn’t even “raw”, in the grand scheme of things. what you are revealing is a preference for slicker, more to-the-grid, and digitally recorded and highly altered production. it’s a different approach, it is not inherently better and Clarity is not inherently inferior because that’s not the approach they took on that record. you don’t need to have an engineering degree to have an opinion, and I never said that. however, just as it is frustrating to you to feel attacked for having preferences, it is also frustrating for some (myself) to see people make these grand judgment statements that are just not rooted in any objective knowledge of the field/topic/whatever in question.

Anyone else think the lyrics were “I’m alone in this, i’m an ass i’ve always been right behind what’s happening” just me cool

i appreciate this reply more so than just being told i was making a "ridiculous comparison". and tbf i never knocked Clarity for the sound, it' a top 2 or 3 jimmy album, was just more noting that it had a noticeably different sound to me, and wondered if that was why some users were marking it lower in their preferences.

  7. I thought it was "I'm alone in this and I'm as I've always been, right behind what's happening" and I've sung it like that for YEARS, but there's no 'and' there.

Clarity definitely took some getting used to when I came to it after Futures (which was my first Jimmy Eat World album). Comparatively, it does sound “rawer” and less polished. Nowadays though, I wish more records sounded like that. If every emo record had that level of production, I’d be a bigger emo guy.

The snare sound is so beefy on Clarity it legitimately scared me when it came in on Table For Glasses

finished the run through. surviving is pretty clearly the best post-CTL record imo. might even overtake CTL for me. IB has some great songs but is also a little inconsistent

Old songs in set get organically updated because of a live setting usually.

Yeah, this is how I feel too, on both counts. Integrity Blues has a patch in the middle that I'm not particularly enamored with. I really loved that record when it came out, but it's faded a bit for me with time. Surviving maybe doesn't have as high of highs, but is the more solid record start to finish.

Listening to Clarity right now. I've always been super in love with the Fireworks/Heaven/Blister trio, but the Believe/Sunday/Crush run is really something as well.

  18. I didn’t like Believe when I first heard the record. I was so stupid back then

I get that, it’s actually probably the case that some people’s perceived “flaws” with the production of the record hold it back for some. but also the songs really do have more space to them, they have more of an ebb and flow, it’s less hook-centric I guess in some songs, and they aren’t as in-your-face as a lot of their later material is, and I think some people just don’t care for that approach. for me, that stuff can be far more compelling when done properly.
by comparison, yes, absolutely. but I wish people would stop seeing those qualities as inherent negatives when they aren’t. might take a bit to get used to— and maybe some will never come around to it— because our ears have kind of been conditioned over the years to favor highly polished and massive production, but I really wish that didn’t so often come at the expense of discounting the merits of the opposite approach. it doesn’t indicate a lack of competency if a producer or band goes for a less polished approach. it all requires a great deal of skill, tbh, and keen ears.

I just want it on the record that I've been the #1 Static Prevails defender for forever. That album is one of the best examples of the raw, mid-90s emo sound ever. And it still rips to this day. Just because they improved as a band since that record doesn't make it not great.

That one and "Heaven" were the first ones that clicked for me, coming right from Futures.

Yeah, I completely agree. Looking back, I acknowledge that my initial reaction to Clarity had a lot more to do with it not sounding exactly like Futures than it did with not liking how it sounded. I was 14 at this point and had very little knowledge of production/music in general, and just knew that I loved how Futures sounded. So while it took some getting used to, with Clarity, that was ultimately a good thing that got me into a slightly different lane of music and expanded my horizons.

maybe I will like Surviving more when I get to it in my discog run this time around. I felt pretty underwhelmed by it when it dropped.
in many respects they have undeniably improved, but to my own personal tastes I find the more rough around the edges approach more interesting than some of their more refined later material. in the future, I imagine I will probably reach for Static Prevails over a few of their more recent records.

yeah Futures was the first to click for me as well and Clarity took months for me to really get into (which makes it kinda funny to me now that Futures is relatively low in my ranks while Clarity is right up top). it ended up clicking on a long ride, I actually fell asleep during it but still somehow innately “knew” that I had fallen in love with it? it was weird, but ever since then it was like I heard it with a different set of ears and it pretty immediately became my favorite. I had a similar experience with The Moon and Antarctica, actually. sometimes sleeping through an album can weirdly help me fall in love with that record? haha idk why, most ppl would probably just take that as a sign that the record is a bore.

never really became a huge fan of Surviving, it's so safe and unexciting to me. It's Jimmy doing Jimmy by the numbers, which is fine and enjoyable. I still enjoy it, but 555 is the only time that I hear any sort of progress or pushing their bounds. This far into their career, I just prefer when they make more unexpected music

Believe In What You Want is so dope. The intro reminds me a ton of another song that I can't think of though. Maybe something by Saves the Day or a similar band?
