Democrats gonna democrat I guess, but everyone rushing to defend a shithead move really sucks.

I think the confusion comes from the fact that the house bill that passed and the one the senate was pushing for was going to increase the $600 payments to $2000, so that’s where the $1400 belief rightly originated from. The problem was that even after the $600 checks went out they continued to say “$2000” which confused people.

It is an honest confusion, but I think people should now be able to realize what they meant and that they were wrong and not continue to hound Biden as if he went back on his promise

Putting aside whether people were genuinely confused about this or if they are faking their outrage - do you think picking a fight about the verbiage you used while not helping people out as much as you lead them to believe you were going to is a great strategy at this moment in time...???

Also, they need to stop saying "$2,000 checks". That means a certain thing that is apparently not what they mean when they are saying it.

the only reason some of us know the 1400 vs 2000 difference is because we're fucking sickos and are in this thread all day every day. If you're a Georgian voter and the two democratic senators say you need to vote for them to get a $2000 check and the president elect says the only way he can sign the bill to get you $2000 checks is to vote for said senators, then it's pretty obvious you should just go for $2000 checks that you promised and not walk back your own proposal and compromise with yourself from the start. you think that's gonna motivate people to come back out for Warnock in 2022 or any other Dem running??

If I give you $600 and then say the words "I am going to give you a two thousand dollar check" you automatically assume that means that I am then going to give you a check for $1400 to add to the original $600 thus totalling $2000 altogether when the two amounts are added together...???

If you had spent weeks (months?) before that saying "we should bump the $600 up to $2000" then yes that's what I would assume lol

But the thing is, when the democrats for weeks kept saying “$600 is not enough, we need $2000 checks instead”, obviously that clearly means $2000, not $2600. Again yeah it is a problem that even after the $600 checks went out to keep saying $2000, but for the majority of the time it was quite clear that $2000 meant $600 increases to $2000. People who were confused maybe should ask themselves why they think they would change what they meant even if it wasn’t conveyed in an entirely clear way.

It honestly seems like they are only using the term "2k checks" now to try to make it seem like "2k checks" sounds like a normal way to describe $1400.

  11. and then the $600 payments went out and democrats continued to say "we need to send $2000 checks"

I can't wrap my head around people rushing to defend Democrats doing the stupid Democrat thing where they pre-sabotage themselves before the Republicans even get a chance to fuck them up.

Didn't they immediately move to pass a bill that would add $1400 on top? That seemed to be a pretty clear indication of their policy proposal post-$600 payments passing...

Even if you assume it means the 600 + 1400, it will have been almost a month since the $600 check. This is about more than messaging, people need the money.

but what matters is that we don’t harm the optics of the Biden admin, not what those people need!

So that’s where the outrage should be. None of the BS “Biden promised $2000 and now he’s going back on his word” when it’s disingenuous

  19. As @dylan said, the fact that we are even having this argument is due to the fact that most people aren't Very Online and if you casually follow a democrat on social media you've been seeing "$2000 checks!" for weeks now.

I think we all agree that no one was intentionally misleading voters; it's that the messaging got fucked up.

    Get ready for $200

Do people forget we still just have a 50/50 senate?

Gonna be hard enough to get Manchin to fall in line to get this stimulus package passed. There is a lot of good stuff in it beyond the checks.

Well I’m saying if you are gonna be mad that’s why you should be mad. I still think it’s a very good bill that isn’t worth delaying it to try and get an extra $600. But I understand why people would want there to be bigger direct payments

Asked my partner who is not as super tuned into politics about the check difference. The answer was they thought it would be the $1400 check. So there is that and my two cents to this debate.
