It’s insane to unplug from everything for awhile and just think that people really did storm the Capitol Building today. It’s cliche to say it feels like a movie, but it really does seem like it.

It’s going to be really hard for Cruz and Hawley to declare themselves Trump’s heirs when a Trump will 100% be in the 2024 primary. This really was all for nothing for them.

Can’t find the tweet now, but earlier saw someone say: Who would have guessed that the Peanuts football gag would end up being the most prescient political metaphor ever

Would pay good money to see a GOP rep get their ass beat on the house floor. When was the last time a fist fight happened in congress?

Y'know, I saw that and from the angle I was seeing it just looked like a bunch of people were trying to leave.

In federal congress, there was a tense confrontation in 1985, but the last true brawl was 1902

Legitimate question that I never thought I'd have to ask:

If someone were to murder a person in the US capitol building, is there a state or city level jurisdiction DC falls under that could properly prosecute them for murder or would it only be a federal case, which would allow the president to pardon them?

I’ve tried typing up a longer explanation several times now but it gets messy every time because their system is a mess. Basically: D.C. has their own legal code, but that code exists at the discretion of the feds. They also have their own court system distinct from the federal courts. So if you’re tried and convicted under the DC system, that is *not* the same as getting a federal conviction.

But also, DC code nonetheless *derives* its legal authority from the feds (rather than being wholly distinct from them, the way that state laws are); it was Congres that made their code and gave them the authority to amend it. So I believe the president still has the ability to pardon DC convictions. Not sure the extent to which the DC mayor may have pardoning power as well tho

And you can be prosecuted for the same criminal act under both federal and state law; that isn’t double jeopardy. Since DC is in that weird grey area, the logic could go either way on that I guess. Don’t know if that issue has already been settled.

Also the simple answer is that if someone committed murder *inside* the capital, the feds would be writing up their criminal complaint before the body gets to the morgue lol
