So from what I’ve read the new variant is a huge cause for concern. I’m constantly scared and sad these days. Is anyone else having trouble processing how bad this has gotten?

What a dark time in human history.

 

All I know is that experts say the vaccine is still good for the new variant, and that the variant isn't necessarily more deadly; however because of how much faster is transmits between people, we need to be even more vigilant and social distance to an even greater degree

 

Imagine your penal system being so fucking brutal and unfair, your oldest ally is like “You know what? We were gonna give Assange to you but your system is so oppressive that we decided to hold on to him because we can’t trust you to not be like that.

 

It’s absolutely (as in not relatively) more deadly as the significantly higher number of infections will put an additional strain on the healthcare system.

so while your individual risk of getting severely ill from it remains the same when/if(!) you get it, deaths will go up more than with the old strain, and substantially so.

Read it said from someone in the medical community that we would be better off with the deadliness of the virus going up 50% rather then the infectiousness going up 50% like this new variant.

yes, and the reason is because you're adding 50% to a number that keeps increasing exponentially, whereas the death rate wouldn't necessarily make the disease spread more

(I'd argue if covid was more deadly people would take precautions more seriously and it'd actually spread less, but I digress)

I believe it's another mutation to the spike protein that makes it easier for the virus to attach to possible host cells (but not an expert at this so could be wrong or that could have just been early speculation, but there definitely a bunch of mutations on the spike protein)

 

I just saw someone I know in a nursing home just got diagnosed with the virus and has fallen very sick, and he was just vaccinated a little over a week ago. Feel awful for him and his family.
