I do! I'm saying I'd like to see him write more songs with hooks in future, as that's the style of songwriting I enjoy the most from him. But as I said, this album is growing on me

    Yep.

I don't listen to Darkness on the Edge of Town thinking "boy, I wish this was fun like The Wild, The Innocent and The E Street Shuffle." If that's what I want from Bruce on that given day, I put on The Wild, The Innocent and the E Street Shuffle

at a certain point you're gonna have to let go of what you want an artist to do.

He can do whatever he wants to do and I'll support it! I'm simply stating my personal preference. I may sound overly negative in my last few posts, but as I said earlier in the thread, despite my criticisms this is one of my favourite albums of the year.

i guess i just dont understand the need to harp on that point. like, it should be clear to anyone listening to this by the time they get halfway through that the beat-driven hooks are gone and he's going for something much more experimental and unique. so to continuously say oh i wish i could hear him on this kind of beat is weird when its obvious he has no interest in that anymore. take this album for what it is, not what you prefer it would be, and judge it on those merits. if you dont like it you dont like it (sounds like you do but im just saying), but the wishing for something else is just gonna get tiring quick if you dont accept where he's at now.

totally cool for him to post his opinion. totally cool for me to try to understand the angle of that opinion. not sure what people posting "so good" has to do with it

Anytime someone posts a differing opinion about this record 20 people jump down their throat. I enjoy people actually discussing the record and what they do or don't like about it rather than a bunch of post just saying its "sooooooOoOOoOoOoo good".

I do accept this is where he is now. Frank is one of my favourite artists and Channel Orange is personally one of the most important albums I've ever listened to. As a huge fan I had unrealistic expectations for this album. I think we've all been guilty of placing unrealistic expectations on our favourite artists from time to time. I was simply expressing that this album has taken some getting used to. But as I said, with each listen I'm liking it more and more. "Self Control" is without a doubt one of my favourite songs this year and I think the album is a really cohesive piece that works well to develop a certain vibe. I accept your point that you have to take an album for what it is and judge it on that basis, and that's exactly what I intend to do.

i havent seen anywhere close to 20 people jump down anyone's throat. and thats cool that you prefer that, i do too, thats not what this is about so i dont understand what it has to do with it

When someone posts a "negative" opinion and people who have positive feelings question them as to why they think/feel that it's not jumping down the persons throat it's wanting to have an open discourse about the album imo.

Are we not discussing it? The posts over the last page are infinitely more conducive to conversation and discussions than the ones you have graced us with like "how could anybody like Nikes"

exactly we're just having a conversation about expectations we have for artists i think its a totally valid conversation to have from both sides

I think I could say at one point I loved every second of Channel Orange and I do still think it's a great album but I couldn't tell you the last time I turned it on and listened front to back. Obviously I think they're all really well written songs and I enjoy everything but there's some sheen on it, like Frank was still hiding behind something in it. Like he was afraid to let himself go. It came out at a huge point in his life and was him laying himself bare at times but it kind of feels like he was compensating. He was disguising this record with some intensely personal themes under a style, that while it was 100% him it didn't feel fully like him. Idk maybe I'm over analysing it but CO seems like that's what Frank wanted to be seen like whereas this seems more how Frank is. Maybe I'm just putting a little bit of myself in his place here but that's what this seems like to me.

I'm fully aware people might like the more "bangers" style Frank but man, I can't listen to this and not think this is the album he needed to make and I think it's a damn good one.
