I picked up the keeley caverns a couple weeks ago and its pretty great. You can get a lot of different sounds out of it

 

Cool I have tried the avalanche run, It was ok. I’ll look into the keely caverns, I was also looking potentially at a whompler ethereal, anyone have any experience with one of those?

 

I know this isn’t gear specific, but every now and then this insta feed gets me a little too good

 

I was able to snag a Drolo Stamme[n] on Saturday. Cannot wait for it to show up!

Also got a Count to 5 during his sale. Figured it was the best time to try it, if it's not for me I can sell it quickly to break even.

 

Y’all I’ve been trying to build up a pedal board this winter and i need help. I’m so frustrated because my tone just sounds like butt. Are there any resources you have used in learning about how to really dial in a nice sound? I feel like I maybe never quite got a grasp on how to navigate all of these knobs and am feeling pretty overwhelmed!

I bought two delays and a volume pedal to do swells and I can kinda get alright sounds in that department.

But I mainly want a pretty simple reverby sound somewhere in the realm of a Julien baker tone, maybe a tiny bit grittier. RV-6 is just not getting me anything I feel super happy with and I don’t think I’ve dialed in a good tone with the voyager either. I feel like I don’t know what I’m doing, since people seem to really like all of these pedals.

I thought you were asking about getting a good base tone. you’ve got a great guitar and amp for that. I would add a compressor.

 

yeah, i'd just spend some more time tweaking. it can be daunting at first but all of your gear is "good" enough to get the sounds you're wanting

what kind of cables are you using? power supply? sometimes stuff like that, if you sacrifice quality, can really fuck your tone.

 

i dunno how loud u all usually play but as someone that is afflicted w having a downstairs neighbor just saying its easy to forget sometimes that a simple lack of volume is the biggest tone killer there is.

Finch – Late Night w/ Conan O’Brien – What It Is To Burn

I've always been curious about this effect that Randy from Finch used in this performance of 'What It Is To Burn' at 2:40 and 3:00.

Does anybody know the pedal that he's using? To me it sounds like a delay type effect?

At 2:40 where there's a drop and it trails a bit sounds like a tremolo or rotary effect. But rest sounds like just delay to me.

 

I'd just spend time tweaking the knobs until it sounds good. I usually start with everything at noon and turn treble down and base up at first, then adjust to ear. A compressor will probably help as well, so maybe find a nice cheap one to test (something Behringer or Joyo). You have a great guitar/amp so it's about just finding the setting that sounds good to your ear.

 

I am in need of a new amp. I am open to any suggestions from people who have experience with amps in the sub $800-$900 price range, specifically Fenders newest series of their classic amps (hot rod, blues junior, 65/68Princeton).

I don’t have any music shops nearby to go test them out myself, so I am kind of relying on recommendations at this point.

 

Those are all great amps. I have the 65 Princeton and it’s insane for surf and country tones. The other 2 are the tweed style. I don’t think you can find Princeton’s in that price range though.

 

Don't know anything about if there are newest models, but the Hot Rod Deluxe is my favorite amp ever. The clean tone is just perfect, honestly way better than the DRRI which you would think would be superior given the pedigree and higher price tag but it isn't. If there are downsides to the HRD it's that the dirt channel is good not great, and if you want natural breakup from the incredible sounding clean channel you have to turn it up absurdly loud. The sweet spot for tone/non crazy volume is a little touchy on the volume knob (it jumps from too quiet to too loud a little quick) but it's super easy to work around, and no trem. I've also played the 68 princeton a bunch and its pretty equally excellent but IMO not worth double the cash - no idea what the market's like now but 5 years ago you could get the HRD used for under $400 every day and I know the reissue series amps really couldn't be touched for less than 6 (with the 68 models being more).

Long story short if you want that perfect reverbed modern fender clean, the hot rod deluxe can't be beaten on price and I don't really think the more expensive models sound better. If you want something dirtier or something more 60s sounding you might want to look elsewhere, but assuming you just want a workhorse fender I really don't think there's a better optinon.

 

Thanks for taking the time to walk me through your experience. I feel like I’ve been pulled heavily to the new iteration of Hot Rods and have really liked the tones people have been pulling out of them on their YouTube demos.

 

Got myself a Fractal FM3 for Christmas since I mostly just play in my apartment and can't use an amp very well here. Anybody else here using Fractal stuff? Curious what to check out first!

Yoo how is it? I was thinking about pulling the trigger on the classic vibe today.

 

I got home pretty late so I didn’t get to jam on it for too long but so far I’m liking it a lot. Super comfortable guitar. I think eventually I’ll probably upgrade a couple things on it, but overall, it’s a lot of fun to play.

 

Id rather buy a squier and upgrade it than buy a fender honestly

 

The J Mascis one is very cool, for a signature guitar

 

Finally got around to doing a thing that I’ve been meaning to do for a while.

 

Any good books recs for scales/fret board exercises? Trying to be more disciplined in practicing those.
