Fury Road is Australian. Raiders is great though.

I think I'm gonna go Heat over The Rock

    EDIT:
    Or T2, I guess. Verhoeven doesn't count?

Fury Road, Heat, T2, any Verhoeven are good picks.

Not sure which one I’d actually say is the best, but I feel it’s probably one of these:

    Speed
    The Matrix
    Raiders
    T2

if we’re counting heat as action, it’s heat

Fury Road best distilled “action”, Heat has elements of other genres so it’s not as pure an “action” movie. They’re both stupid good.

Like I don’t know how anyone else distinguishes “crime” as a genre, if you break genres down to categories like that Heat fits better there

Putting together this Criterion challenge is so fun! Definitely doing 100% first-time watches.

T2 is a good answer. Not sure I’d really consider Heat an action film. At least not in the same sense that The Rock and T2 are.

Action blends well with a lot of genres like sci-fi, so if T2 counts I think Aliens is a similarly worthy contender

It wouldn't be my pick but I'm surprised no one has mentioned Die Hard.

Keep meaning to watch Speed Racer. I never saw it and it seems like it’s reputation has grown immensely the last few years.

Speed and Robocop I think should both be in that conversation too. I love T2 and Aliens though.

Mission Impossible is the easy choice if we're counting a series.

I’ve been meaning to watch my first Wong Kar-Wai and finally got around to it last night. Started with Chungking Express, loved it so much that I went straight into Fallen Angels, and now I’m starting Happy Together. What a vibe.

Should I just keep moving forward chronologically from here, or is it worth checking out what he did before Chungking Express?

it’s better than any of the mission impossible movies, which are great, but okay!

I would say keep moving forward and then circle back to the earlier works if you want more. Ashes of Time is cool, a real curiosity within his body of work, while the other two offer a glimpse into his early development as a filmmaker. But ultimately they are probably his weakest works, alongside My Blueberry Nights (another strange one, but I kinda like it tbh).

Try to catch his mid-length film The Hand while working through his work if you can too.
