I also don't disagree that there's an interconnected narrative and the records are more enjoyable if you're familiar with his discography, but I mean most good artists "grow" and you can hear that as they age.

Also don't like Yeezus very much so w/e

I suppose it's a bit like watching a modern western film or an homage to an old director. A good piece of art stands on its own and can be digested individually; however, much of the smaller nuances and context and themes are missed on those just getting into the genre.

That's where I get a bit jaded, I can't fathom how a person could hold up something like GKMC as a "classic" if they are not well versed in the roots of the culture

There's a certain importance to start from the beginning of an acclaimed artist's discography for the purpose of tracking progression, and seeing how they changed, and maybe provides context for how the musical climate changed alongside them.

At the same time, with all the great music we are given, I don't begrudge anyone for saying "hey what's one album where this artist is at the top of their game?". Like, MBDTF isn't even my favorite Ye record, but it was a universally acclaimed album that got a lot of posters on AP (and other casual listeners as a whole) to further explore hip hop. It's not wholly inaccessible, and has for many been a great starting point

    TL;DR it's not really a big deal

The nice thing is you can always return to art as your appreciation of nuance and influence grows. You can appreciate the stand-alone greatness of GKMC or TPAB or whatever, and then come back 10 years later and hear all new things. And both those responses are wonderful in their own ways.

I started with 808s and Graduation purchased on the same day. You can appreciate the progression and narrative conceptually without literally listening in that order.

Kanye West's music is total fucking garbage. I've given all of his records a shot, and I don't get it.

We don't need to delve into lyrics and politics and and stuff in order to see how his albums aren't total garbage, right? We can let that slide as a poor choice of words?

Actually no, I'll stand by that. How does this thread just get out of talking about Glassjaw and TBS being misogynistic (which I agree with) but then praise Kanye West?

    Crazy.

People criticize Kanye all the time for being misogynistic, and also people praised Glassjaw in that same discussion. C'mon, lazy argument

It's not lazy at all. Its actually a fair argument to make. I'm aware that Kanye has been criticized, I've read all about it. But I just said his music was garbage (which I think it is) and I was accused of having a poor choice of words. That's a bit ironic if you ask me.

Then don't, but let's not act like it's any different. It's not anymore "art" than anyone else accused of the same thing.

But it is deeply rooted in race and oppression which Glassjaw is not, I suggest you take a look at his lyrics or take a course on social justice
No one is out here defending the shitty Ye lyrics either, we're all aware he has them.
