I was going to say that I was grateful they never released any of his films, but they did do Following.

What are the worst Criterion films? The Michael Bay films are probably the easiest ones that come to mind.

Id assume one of the new ones that they release immediately into the collection

 

Like releasing every Wes Anderson film.

Some others have made lists. The aforementioned Bay films (The Rock and Armageddon), but also Chasing Amy and The Curious Case of Benjamin Button.

I love The Rock so much. Armageddon is good as well.

most people didn’t like the Curious Case of Benjamin Button release for purely aesthetic reasons (the blue blu ray case instead of the clear). It’s mid to lower tier Fincher but still worthy imo.

 

All the critics and writers I respect have moved Benji Button up a lot in their rankings recently, definitely think I need to re-watch it.

 

I personally liked tiny furniture but not sure it belongs in the CC.

Jarmusch would be the director that I would say probably didn’t need ALL of his movies in there.

Wes is one of my favorite directors so I’m fine that they do his stuff plus he is one of the few living directors that puts a ton of thought and care into the releases so I always think they are worth the investment. The art, packaging, special features are always so good. I have the grand Budapest out to watch from the recent sale. Looking forward to digging into it.

 

Anyone doing this? Stumbled upon it today. I don't normally do these Letterboxd "challenges" but the options here are really broad and I kind of want something to shake up my viewing habits. Plus it'll give me a motivation to watch some of the unwatched discs on my shelf.

The Criterion Challenge 2021

 

I’m doing that AND attempting to do every scavenger hunt next year. Should be able to slot four in a month pretty easily.

 

It'd sure be nice if they added Children of Men

 

Love that idea. I’ll post my list here in a second once I figure out what I want to do. I also have a completionist list going for every Criterion release (to watch not own lol).

 

I made my list this morning and I'm pretty excited about it. Had to cheat on a few of the director picks - Godard, Antonioni, and Cassavetes - because I wanted to make it all first time watches. Picked shorts for Godard (Scenario de Sauve qui peut la vie) and Antonioni (People of the Po Valley) and went completely outside the collection for Cassavetes (Minnie and Moskowitz) since I've seen all the features on offer through the collection or the channel for these filmmakers. Thinking of swapping in non-Criterion features for Godard and Antonioni instead though too.

 

It’s a cool guideline. I don’t really do “challenges” but this year when the shutdowns all first happened and I was working from home and had more time to watch movies, often two a day, I just tried to not repeat decades in a week and for every American film, also watch something from outside the States. It was great.

 

My least favorite Criterion’s that I’ve seen are The Naked City and Dressed to Kill.

 

Dressed to kill was a movie I thought I was gonna love and ended up hating and Body double was a movie I thought I was gonna hate and ended up loving.

 

My least favorite Criterion movie is The Graduate. I also really don't like Me and You and Everyone We Know.

 

It’s great. It’s the best American action film probably.

 

I love the Rock but Fury Road and Raiders of the Lost Ark have something to say about this.

 

I also despise The Graduate. That would definitely be in the mix.

 

I rewatched the Graduate recently and loved it.
