Yeah, sorry. I am not a fan of streaming services either. I grew up going to record stores or buying records/merch from shows.

I was never a fan of the ultra rare limited access to content, even when it was hard copies.

Just listened to Rejoice, I was not super familiar with the live version that everyone around here seems to love. The song was alright, a few of the other Patreon songs are pretty easily better imo.

Live version just felt like a big album closer. Should still be on YouTube somewhere. Plus if it’s just a demo it may have felt bigger as a finished song if they had wanted it to

I think it’s really important at some point for you to recognize that the model you’re suggesting they follow is the model that has killed more bands than can be counted. Bands just putting stuff out there so some people can buy digital and some people can buy box sets is literally what nearly killed the industry entirely, because people don’t buy stuff. Bands HAVE to be creative and come up with alternative ways of doing things or else they can’t be bands, because the general public has proven time and again they can’t be trusted to actually support artists in the way you’re saying you do.

Also understand: I don’t like missing out on the Patreon stuff either. MO isn’t the only band I love out here doing this, and it sucks not having the cash to commit to multiple bands every month. But this doesn’t suck: the bands I love can keep releasing music because they found ways to generate income. We’ll get more MO music in the long run - more records accessible to everyone - because of this model. And that’s great.

I grew up buying CDs from Target, and just making random purchases to check out new things. Before the internet. Before anything digital. I remember the old days too. And I liked them! But they didn’t work for artists who I think make the world a better place by making music. l I’m glad there are new models for them moving forward, even if I can’t always participate.

Also with the Patreon model. You don't need to subscribe every month. You could literally pay $5 today, download 9 songs you've never heard before, as well as 10 demos from Simple Math and then immediately cancel. That would probably even be cheaper for you than if they sold these songs on bandcamp.

You're basically just paying for early access to stuff. All this stuff will probably eventually be available to the public. But they make good points about people just not spending any money anymore on artists. I know plenty of people who don't buy any physical media, don't go to concerts, and share a Spotify family plan. Listen to thousands of artists for pennies. Just not sustainable.

I mean, even Andy Prince has to do carpentry on the side to make a living.

And the rest of the guys have other jobs too. Producing, scoring, writing, sides projects like Bad Books, running a label.

The music industry is super saturated. Which means it’s tough to make it in the market. These Patreons are still in the early stages. It’s ok for fans to voice feedback on how they feel about it. It’ll morph as time goes on.

No one needs to defend the bands honour on this because it’s not an attack on them. The music industry has never really had a system that works, and that predates Napster.

I’m glad to hear people think this will get released eventually though. I think I’d feel guilty signing up for a pattern for a month and bailing. Could be wrong.

I just listened to the live version for the first time in years and it is much different than the demo. The demo never explodes and stays much more subdued throughout.

That’s too bad. I remember thinking it’d be a big album closer on Simple Math like the River (ignoring Jimmy, He Whispers) was for METN.

I’m sure they get annoyed by fans wanting the loud/soft thing, but they do it so well.

I listened. Kinda bummed we didn’t get the explosive song I heard live but if that’s what they wanted to release they would would have. Still good!

So does anyone else make Manchester Orchestra playlists and always put ‘the Wolf’ and ‘Wolves At Night’ back to back and then pretend that the band would do that in a live set list as a joke most of the crowd won’t get? No? Just me?

I regret not getting this most recent pressing of the Right Away, Great Captain Trilogy vinyl set. I already own the second or third pressing, but the new book layout looks really nice.
