Agreed on everything about Sofia. People STILL give her hell for it, even after she’s emerged as a worthy artist in her own right and it’s baffling to me

it's fascinating that nepotism used to be a big deal and not the origin story of every young artist

Literally the first time I ever heard of her was someone referring to her as the girl that ruined the godfather. Its absurd and like Tetra said, we're incredibly lucky that she even stuck with that career after how much shit she got and still gets.

The era of adults clamoring for Pixar films to be taken seriously was the prelude to our current superhero problem. The early 2000's Pixar movies are better than a lot of childrens' films, but when people started to go to theaters to see Toy Story 3 or Up without a child present we were heading down a bad path.

I've seen Pixar movies in theaters by myself but I also think it's fucked up that they had a corporate culture that enabled a predator and took Brave away from a female director so I think it's okay

There’s nothing wrong with seeing toy story
3 or up in theaters without kids. That’s a fucking stupid opinion.

Up & Inside Out are legitimately very good, & it’s not weird for adults to watch ‘em without kids.

The real problem is the adult Disney fan base that watches a disproportionate amount of Pixar, Marvel, Star Wars, etc., compared to everything else they consume. And, the related problem of nostalgic adults saying that movies like Incredibles 2 are for them more than they are for children. But, barring that kinda (depressingly common) unhealthy relationship to the stuff, there’s nothing wrong with well made films targeted toward younger audiences also working for adults.

(I say as I remember how many times I saw Into the Spider-Verse in theaters, as I look at my shelves of Spidey comics. So, what the fuck do I know? lol.)

The "Disney adults" are especially bad here in Central Florida. Everyone wants to remain a child.

Completely agree with Tim. I put the whole Marvel/Star Wars problem more at the feet of the “Disney is my whole personality” people rather than Pixar, because they make animated movies that deal with deeper topics than your average kids film.

Also, I know it’s just jokes, but I never got the “Can’t be a lone adult at a Pixar movie” thing. The last thing a parent cares about is who else in the theater because they’re too busy trying to get their rotten kid to shut up and watch the movie.

If I lived in the general area of Disneyworld, I’d be [more] cynical about adult Disney fandom, too.

(Now I wanna rewatch The Florida Project.)

I can't fathom treating Inside Out like a movie solely for kids

There’s a difference between “for kids” and “solely for kids”. Inside Out, most of the MCU, and Star Wars are for kids, but can be appreciated on further levels by adults. Something like Dora the Explorer is solely for kids. I do think more people should understand that Avengers, Disney/Pixar, and Star Wars are primarily for kids and while you can talk about craft and themes with them, and some are made very well, they absolutely should not be the primary entertainment diet for adults. I do love Inside Out and The Last Jedi and Spider-Verse, but I am not really the target audience for them.

What's really weird is when there's some sort of reboot of kids shows/movies, but the original project is old enough that the only people who would care about it are now nostalgic adults. Like that (now cancelled I guess) Lizzie McGuire reboot, or Fuller House.

Yeah I agree with all of this. I do watch a lot of movies and TV series aimed at kids mostly to see how we're talking to kids about certain issues and such. I find it both important and interesting to see how TV shows and movies are tackling and normalizing issues that pertain to the LGBTQ+ community and gauging where we're at with those conversations. With Inside Out specifically, I think it's a great model for discussing mental health with children and regardless of how that movie personally effected me, I think it's interesting to see how we can have tough conversations early with kids. I don't think there's anything wrong with finding that intriguing or valuable. (Not saying that's what you were saying, just word vomiting)

Eh, I get it. If you think of it as a kids show banking on nostalgia, it’s weird, but if you think of it as a kids show that just happens to have some nostalgia nuggets for those kids’ parents, it’s fine. If I had my own family, & something I used to like was relaunched for kids, I’d be happy to share that with my hypothetical kids.

Though, related to this & the current conversation... I literally less than a week ago heard a couple adults say Girl Meets World sucked. Like, you know it wasn’t made for you, right?

yeah Edge of Seventeen was probably geared towards teenagers but it's great, I probably consume a lot of art where the primary audience is teens

I also just think that especially in the current state of the world, there's nothing wrong with wanting to watch something fun for escapism and that won't have super high stakes.

May be unpopular but where I live there’s a lot more people with the mindset that they must not watch MCU or Disney/Pixar films out of an attempt to project how mature they are. If they just don’t find the films to be interesting that is one thing, but the majority show obvious signs that they have to separate themselves from a particular brand of films or else others will think they are childish. Some even toss out LOTR which is an atrocity.

But this is clearly what those things are. To me it’s different than, say, the CGI Smurfs movies, where it works on its own as a thing *for kids*, but uses an older classic property for adult nostalgia’s sake. Whereas I can’t imagine a kid today choosing to watch Fuller House if not for their parents pushing it on them lol

The comfortability of being familiar with the universe and characters play into it. I see it all the time with DBZ fans. They can’t get into other anime series at their age but they still enjoy watching DBZ or keep up with Dragon Ball Super.
