I said in here a few weeks back I'm pretty sure about Toomey, but Ron Johnson not losing in 2016 is up there on my list of things that really pissed me off about 2016.

Do the Dems have anyone that has a shot?

anything less than $2000 and retroactive is an insult and dem leadership needs to be [redacted]

$2000 was the dem proposal as is before Repub negotiation so it was nnever going happen as long as Repubs controlled one of the two chambers. Retroactive wasn't going to happen either as great as that would havebeen.

It's the one-time-ness of it that really bugs me. $1200 per person is cool, obviously should be higher but it's stil a good chunk of money....but one check doesn't do shit. If I'm the Dem leadership that's where my red line is on the stimulus checks. Needs to be 3-6 months minimum and maybe it phases it out earlier if the vaccines start working and the economy starts returning to normal and etc. This isn't that hard to figure out as discussed earlier about the economy...if people don't have moeny they can't spend it and they cant' survive, it doesn't matter how much you "open" things.

40 million are due to be evicted when the moratorium lifts on Dec 31. it's a humanitarian crisis and $2000 a month and retroactive and/or some sort of rent and mortgage forgiveness needs to happen.

Also worth noting that despite the moratorium, plenty of sheriff's offices are still carrying out evictions.

yeah, but Republicans were never caving to that...ever. That should have been apparent when it was the initial proposal from Dems in the house and senate. A reinstatement, and strengthening of, the eviction moratorium is probably in need of some energy and rhetoric because in all this focus on the Congress i haven’t seen anything about the admin extending even the faulty protections they had in place.

problem is Trump is such a sore loser there’s a really good chance he doesn’t do anything about it out of spite.

I think victor was saying that the original federal moratorium was only applicable to certain types of households, and anything beyond that was coming from the states. Which maaaaybe so of them will extend those protections if they get the state and local funding in the next bill?

Our state announced about a month ago that they were using cares act funding to give up to 10K in mortgage or rent assistance to people who needed it. I don’t remember the total number they were putting into it tho so not sure how many people it’ll help.

Tens of thousands and counting have been and continue to be evicted with the moratorium in place. Thousands have been evicted in my county in the last two months. It’s crazy watching it happen and hearing politicians say we need to do something soon or else.... Uhm no you needed to do something months ago, families are suffering and people are dying with every day that passes without relief.

Yeah the cdc moratorium only applies to nonpayment of rent and you need to submit a declaration that says you meet five criteria. Landlord attorneys easily get around it by alleging things like breach of lease instead of nonpayment or they just rely on the fact that people can’t navigate the declaration and court process. Some judges have even said they just don’t believe the tenant and don’t apply the declaration even when it’s filed. It has helped when attorneys are involved to get the declaration signed and filed but even then especially with month to month or expired leases landlords are able to evict and just say the lease is up they want a new tenant.
Rental assistance has prevented a lot of evictions but so many landlords just want the people out because they don’t like tenants who miss a payment.
Some states have issues broad moratoriums, not here in Ohio though. We’ve got no help from the state.

It seems dumb to kick people out now anyway considering the market HAS to be bad. Like, so many people not being able to afford rent right now has to be depressing prices and limiting your pool of potential new renters. I hope all the shits who evict people don’t find new renters until the economy is back on its feet and they miss out on any rental assistance that their old tenants could have paid if it gets passed.

not sure how it is across the US, but here in Denver rental applications are up and housing prices continue to increase and there is an inventory shortage on available homes on the market still. makes no sense.

Yeah it depends on the area but in general we were seeing rental applications increase. That looks like it is starting to change though.

thats insane to me. The one time I can remember our rent not going up for a year or two when I was living with my mom was when the economy tanked and the apartment complex we lived in ended up with a bunch of empty apartments because people couldn’t afford it.

What we’re seeing is just more and more people in the renter market who had an income hit for various reasons and are downgrading or just moving on from a now disgruntled landlord. Enough of those people are doing well enough to fill the relatively nice places. We think we’re seeing more people unfortunately displaced in the bottom of the market, and public housing waiting lists are longer than ever. Slumlords just move from tenant to tenant. We’ve had to bring cases against a few LLs here who were taking rental assistance and then still evicting people. The lower end of the private housing rental market is a hellscape.
