Honestly, what’s the ultimate downside of a broad-scale secession? Certainly it’s not ideal, but having California/NY/New England/mid-Atlantic/assorted others could still comprise a formidable nation. Heck, California alone is a top-10 world economy.

Yes, of course. And of course the inevitable military interventions would be terrible. But, in a hypothetical peaceful transition, what is the downside? Losing a significant portion of the agricultural economy? The geographic disconnect of not maintaining a contiguous nation? That kind of stuff.

The big question with the GOP justices on the Supreme Court was always whether or not they cared about keeping Trump around. I guess they decided they got what they wanted, a 6-3 majority for the next several years that can chip away at Roe v. Wade, overturn the ACA, and generally block any progressive policy. They don't need Trump anymore. In fact it will be easier to accomplish their goals without him around making a mess all the time. Wasn't a guarantee things would turn out this way, though. Maybe with a more competently-executed legal strategy it would have bee different.
