It’s crazy how influential and involved the guys in Blink (and Tom as well) have been outside of their work in their band.

I think it’s very likely Travis gets into the Rock HOF before blink does.

The MTV Movie awards are this weekend? I thought that was usually in June

So what are you implying? You mentioned WMAG and ATST, so are you saying EOTS is their masterpiece? The record with lyrical strengths like:

    - He's a player, diarrhea giver
    - Forgive our neighbor Bob, I think he humped a dog
    - He took the seat off his own bike because the way that it felt

Worth noting that untitled being a "masterpiece" isn't saying all that much

I’m late to this, but I’m pretty sure “And I” by BCR and “Not Now” have the same guitar riff intro. They always remind me of one another.

Blink still releasing an EP anytime soon?

Last update was it probably won’t be out this year and might turn into a full length album. Matt was working on some of the song files Mark and Travis sent to him.

Never noticed that but true. Always felt that some tracks were b-sides for bcr

also, the opening guitar riff for Violence is pretty much All Systems Go.

It was right around BCR that Tom started using those octave chords with the open string in between. It was like once he learned that trick, he stuffed it into almost every track on Untitled. It was the difference between the intros of “And I” and “Not Now” which were basically the same riff otherwise.

Those melodies he created from those octave notes were one of my favourite aspects to that record.

I feel like he does that a lot on TOYP too if I'm thinking of the right thing. Anthem Part II and Please Take Me Home at least off the top of my head

Pretty sure he does it during the guitar solo in First Date too.

Well, yes and no. On TOYPAJ he would add a harmonic note to the octave but he would use his middle finger on the string below instead of using the open string in the middle. It kinda-sorta achieves the same result but only on one chord instead of all of them in the scale (if that makes sense).

For example, “Please Take Me Home”, “Anthem Part 2” and “First Date” are all in the wrong key to pull that off and you’d need a capo (which he does not use). That’s why in “Down” he DOES use a capo.

On Untitled and BCR, a bunch of the songs are in F# minor/A major or D major so you can use the open middle strings all day long.

I'm happy you brought up Down. Without the A string droning that B, it sounds weak.

Open strings ringing out makes a HUGE difference in all of his riffs.

Feeling This is another great example that most miss out on (including Matt Skiba, this is not a dig).

Tom's guitar is in drop D with a capo on the 2nd fret, thus, the D string is now E.. as is the once down-tuned low E string.

I would love to know if this was a Jerry Finn idea or if Tom wrote it with that intention.. considering this is the most complicated way to get all those octaves ringing out throughout the discography.

There is no doubt that Blink sounded bigger live as a three piece with Tom writing riffs this way.

Agreed with all of that. It’s actually really fun to play some of those songs because you mostly have the root note playing behind the overall melody the whole time and can just hammer those chords.

I just looked at the Untitled track list and I’m pretty sure “Obvious” and “Always” are the only Tom-heavy tracks that didn’t use that technique. It’s a really simple thing honestly, but it made a pretty distinct difference in the sound of that record.

Tom got a lot of milage out of that technique.

It is all over WDNTW as well. Though not always in chords, an example would be the palm muted intro of The Adventure where he hits the A string (capo 2) every time it comes back around.

    It's the little things.

If y’all haven’t already you should check out the new Goldfinger album that dropped today. It’s a banger. If you enjoyed the last album, you’ll probably like this new one.

I feel like Tom's creativity as a guitarist is pretty underrated. He may not be the best technical player but he has such a distinct style that you can tell when people are trying to ape it
