Truly impressive how willing, even eager, most Dem elected officials are to roll over and capitulate to the GOP than to try and fight for what’s right.

Why does the president have the ability to pardon people to begin with? Doesn't that just invite more corruption?

 

Why do these people hate themselves so much

 

The president typically makes many pardons during their term, and only a few are ever high profile people. Similar to jury nullification, it’s a final out for people who may have explicitly broken the law, but at the time of their pardon it has become viewed as unjust to punish them. It’s for those areas that the “rule of law” struggles to reach. Famous examples include Carter’s pardon of Vietnam draft dodgers, or Obama’s last minute pardoning/commuting sentences of drug offenders (and Chelsea Manning!).

The hypothetical “check” on the idea that it invites corruption is supposed to be that if the president uses it corruptly, it will hurt them politically and they/their party would lose power. Historically that hasn’t really been the case though lol. Before Trump, Ford’s pardon of Nixon was probably the only one that really made both an immediate and long-term backlash
