well yeah, absolutely. All I’m saying is there absolutely IS a line somewhere and we can’t just arbitrarily take the side of “Any reaction to injustice is justified”

 

You moved the goalposts by escalating the subject instead of drawing from the actual context of what was being said, though. That is not a tactic that creates the trust necessary to have a good faith exchange. So if your goal was to have a real conversation about this - instead of equating looting with the murder of children, which regardless of intent is exactly what happened here - then I'm just letting you know it was a very unproductive strategy.

In short, what you said was never gonna do anything except put people on the defensive because it implied that anyone opposing your point was advocating for child murder.

 

Anybody saying that any action in response to injustice WOULD be advocating for child murder if a child was murdered in reaction to injustice.

that said, wasn’t my intention. My intention was to illustrate my point that there absolutely is a moral line, I went about it the wrong way.

You'd be surprised. I wouldn't keep doing this work if it was never productive (in verifiable ways). The work is frustrating and slow, but not pointless.

That said, to each their own. You are certainly entitled to your feelings on the matter.

And it’s worthy work. But this is just as much of an echo chamber as all the other echo chambers. Except in this one we all (mostly) agree and happen to have morals and decency on our side.

@uuu, the point is that it’s not worth handwringing over the negative side effects of the natural response to this kinda injustice.

There will ALWAYS be a mix of strategic direction action, misplaced targets, the momentum of the whole environment, & fringe bad faith actors. That’s just the nature of these things. Always has been, always will be. Like @Marx&Recreation & I were saying earlier, it’s not worth moralizing it as good or bad, when in reality it just... is. Like, that’s just what the conditions are in the environment these injustices create.

Effort from the outside put into debating the “legitimacy” of those actions, even the inevitable bad actions by bad faith actors, ultimately just takes away from the root issue that should be addressed instead. If we don’t want the negative effects of these reactions, then the answer is to challenge those who created the situation.

(I will say, I don’t disagree that there’s probably a performative side to the way some of the people responded, lol. But, even that would have a mix of healthy & unhealthy emotions feeding into it. It’s hard to blame anyone for having a visceral “let the world burn” response to the bullshit of the world. I can empathize with that easier than I can tone policing protests.)

 

Seriously, just stop talking about looting. You can have as many opinions about looting as you want but you’re never gonna stop people from taking advantage of a situation and doing it so what’s the point? If you condemn it you’re just go balling to the civility police that you care about law and order or whatever and if you say looting is always good and encourage it you just look stupid. And of course it just moves the conversation away from cops murdering people. So yeah.
