So glad I grew up closer to Queens. Funny that the only time I ever really felt harassed by people calling me a terrorist was when I was visiting a friend in Islip.

 

I don't know. I realize that relativity, subjectivity, and historical context all come into play, but this was literally the exact same joke I keep seeing about Michael Phelps (three things for a desert island: Phelps, saddle, gold medal attached to stick by string). Every time one of these social media hysterias breaks out, rightists parlay it into undermining substantive criticisms and recruiting white moderates. At some point, white liberals, who are most often the driving force behind these social media events, have to break free from the impulse to rabidly search for moral high ground and white savior-hood, and race to get behind any accusation that gains traction. While I am sure there were persons of color and actual white activists that were offended, I am equally sure that the majority of critics were the typical white liberal social media personalities whose moral scorns are their only form of activism.

But Ryan Lochte is an American hero just out having fun with the fellas. It doesn't matter if they urinated on a gas station wall, tore down a door, assaulted an attendant, then lied about it, potentially setting wheels in motion that could have gotten a Black man who "fit the description" killed by a cop.

Lochte and friends are "free, white and 21," though. And boys will be boys, right?"

Just a few months ago James Blake was manhandled in front of a hotel for doing nothing. Prominent Muslim actor sharukh Khan got detained by us airline security for the third time recently.

Hope it's ok to ask this question in here - Regarding the entertainment industry, is there a significance in casting POC in "white roles" that I am missing? What I mean by that specifically is POC being cast as characters that are already known as white characters - Noma Dumezweni being cast as Hermione in the Harry Potter stage play is one example, but what brought this question up was Zendaya being cast as Mary-Jane in the new Spiderman. I saw someone's sarcastic post from the point of view of some douchey reddit commenter saying something like "Mary-Jane is supposed to be a white girl, why can't they create a new role" (or something similar), and it just made me think "why can't they write a new role for a female POC lead?

To me it just feels like shoehorning POC into these roles is a lazy, disengenuous way of filling some imaginary diversity quota, when it is the lack of roles being written for POC in these big productions that is the root of the problem. Or is this still a positive step for representation of non-whites in entertainment; that they can adequately fill these "white roles" with no issue at all?

 

It's a positive step. Especially in superhero properties. It's extremely hard to get original properties made or get audiences invested in new characters. Especially if you were to introduce a new friend in Spider-Man, where he already has canonical friends that fans expect to see. So by casting a POC in any of those roles, or as the Human Torch or even Superman, then important roles that people are invested in already get important representation. Now, a lot of studios and higher ups also use that "it's hard to get audiences invested in a new character or property" idea as an excuse to not make properties with POC, so yes, they should be doing better on that front too. But the fact is that the only reason most of these superhero characters are white in the first place is because they were created in an era where basically only white characters were being created/got any traction. There is no issue with casting them as another race.

I'm currently watching "Welcome to Leith" which is about one of our many Midwestern white supremacists buying up properties in a small North Dakota town to create a breeding ground for the expansion of the National Socialist Movement.

Anyone else seen this shit?

Also, I didn't realize that Matthew Hale, the white supremacist who got a prison sentence for trying to assassinate a federal judge, was a SIU Law graduate. This is yet another (of many) examples of why T4 law schools need to be abolished so as to quit allowing morons to infiltrate our political channels, flood our legal markets with ill-equipped attorneys, and drive up our student loans rates exponentially.

EDIT: I was reading something recently that was very interesting about the origins of the "National Socialist" moniker and how it wasn't necessarily a misnomer at birth, because socialism as a concept existed before and apart from Marx and was chosen to be conceptualized by Nazis as a collective ethnic consciousness and ethnic solidarity, as opposed to an economic collectivist approach to industry. Yet the two ideologies are nearly polar opposite, and it brings up the issue of whether socialist should rename themselves more appropriately as mere Marxists, etc. to distinguish themselves. It's interesting, but I've always liked the way "socialist" sounds phonetically over just about any other name-- "Marxist" sounds somewhat menacing off the tongue.

EDIT #2: It's really fascinating the dynamics of this documentary, in that it's the resistance of rural, white Midwesterners against Neo-Nazism: persons you'd otherwise assume and/or demonize as rightists fighting viciously against racists that are otherwise seeking to recruit them. As someone from a similar geographical/ethnic background, it's strangely inspiring and moving. There was a scene where the head-skinhead badgered a begrieved father (who had moved to the town from a city, and where it was strongly alluded to that his murdered daughter was killed by a black man) about whether his cause had anything to do with the daughter's death. Was so fucking despicable.

 

I'm more inclined to agree with the interpretation that they call themselves such because it is a way to co-opt leftist rhetoric and broaden fascism's appeal. The same with their "anticapitalism," which is just a vehicle for antisemitism.

 

It is the same thing as when Trump invokes the idea of remaking the GOP into a "worker's party".
