There’s a difference between someone coming into a thread in good faith and asking what an artist did/how bad it is and (to use this thread as an example) people coming in *while a discussion about pedophilic tweets is taking place* to do a drive-by fart and drop a live music video or talk about how happy they are that the dude’s album is #1 right now. And anyone with a brain knows that difference. Those people are just trying to change the subject and that’s not right and that’s gonna get pushback from me and from other people as well. Not apologizing for that, now or ever.

But to all the people in Aaron’s or Jason’s or Spo’s DMs that are following along and not posting: come post! Ask questions! Be inquisitive and willing to learn and hear people out! You shouldn’t be afraid to join a conversation that you’re on the right side of! If you aren’t sure how to feel about something that’s happened, say so! Ask for advice! That’s what everyone ostensibly all wants to see happen.

Unless you’re going to jump in and try to equivocate or defend one of these artists or try to change the subject. If that’s the reason you’re afraid to speak up, then yeah, go ahead and keep it in the DMs.

 

I'd say there's also a difference in the types of media, imo. I mean I still am on the side of allowing people to discuss the allegations/also discuss how the work affects them without praising the abuser, but there are varying different lines with entertainment.

The shit head from Glee who was in The Edge of Seventeen and Everybody Wants Some got outed for some terrible things. Watching those movies and seeing him, I can't help but think about what a dickhead he is. I can still speak positively about the films and the other performances and the writing/directing.

With CK, I think the show and his standup is a wash. I can't return to Louie, no matter how much I loved it. It was so personal and him that I can't personally separate it. I think that links most closely with music. I can't separate Jesse from BN.

 

I can’t believe I’m saying this again for what feels like the millionth time on this site but:

Nobody cares one bit what anyone else listens to or watches or whatever on their own time. Whatever you individually need to do to get through the day, do it. This world is shit enough without people trying to police what you do or don’t do on your own time in private.

In private. That’s the key. Once you step out of that zone of privacy and make public statements of support, or praise, or whatever, that crosses a line. At that point you are no longer just dealing with your own personal feelings and tolerances. You are no longer drawing your own lines. You’re imposing your own personal comfort level on a community full of people with varying life experiences who may see what you say and be seriously harmed by it. Try for one second to imagine what a survivor of assault would think to see someone on this site talking about how much they love, for example, Ryan Adams. It’s triggering and it’s harmful and frankly it’s just being selfish and shitty for no reason. Have some empathy. Not everyone has the same lines, that’s true! So stop assuming that because you’re still ok listening to Brand New or MGK or whoever else, that other people are as well.

Like what you like, in private. That’s all. You do that and you’re good with me, and I assume everyone else as well. But silence is the same as support in my opinion, so nobody should stop calling that behavior out when it happens.

 

To be fair, I meant just normal things with how people act towards people who do or don't like something that the rest of the thread likes.

I gotta be honest I read it like 4 times to try and figure out what you meant, then just went off ItsAndrew’s post haha

 

you entered a conversation that was already emotionally charged over a ban and defended Jason’s choice to do that, I dunno what you were expecting there either.

 

I also read the post a few times and probably misunderstood it.

 

So where do we go from here? Close down the thread and direct people to the accountability thread like @dylan suggested? That seemed like a popular suggestion presented earlier and would hopefully get those interested in having a good faith discussion re: accountability and their feelings towards MGK to do so (and those who just want to praise MGK or talk about the positives of this album would have to do so on another website).

I agree with most of this.
I'm all about accountability, but the extremes we seem to be calling for on MGK on this site is confusing me. Because of a decade old tweet we should ban his name from this website? Meanwhile we have dozens of threads with hundreds and hundreds of pages of posts for Fall Out Boy and Good Charlotte. Pete Wentz dated a 15 year old girl when he was 24. Joel Madden dated Hilary Duff when she was 16 and he was 25. That shit is fucking disgusting. And neither of those men have ever addressed their actions, a decade+ later. And yet their careers continue and we continue to talk about them. (Pretty sure the last FOB album thread had like 160 pages).
I wanna express more thoughts on this but honestly I'm afraid some of you are going to take the above as a "fuck you lets fight" when really I'm just trying to have a civil dialogue. But it's the toxic bullying that some of this site's users have that led me to block people, which sucks cuz having users blocked is the whole reason why I missed the beginning of this conversation.

Do you think it could be simply not knowing regarding Jesse? I've had to break the news to multiple people within the last year, some just don't keep up with the news side of the bands they listen to.
