Has a president ever refused a debate?

 

Not that I can remember

 

The optics of turning it down are nothing but bad for Trump; misstep after misstep. He's trying reallyyy hard not to win this

 

In 1980, President Carter believed three was a crowd and refused to participate in any debate that included both Republican nominee Ronald Reagan and independent candidate John Anderson, so the incumbent was missing when his two opponents took to the stage on September 21, 1980. As the wrangling continued, the vice presidential debate and the second scheduled presidential debate were cancelled. Finally, just a week before Election Day, Carter had a one-on-one debate with his Republican rival in which Reagan uttered two phrases that quickly entered the political lexicon: “There you go again” and “Are you better off than you were four years ago?”

 

Carter refused to show up to his first debate, as it was a 3 way debate. The third party candidate dropped in the polls and wasn't invited to the second debate.

I have no illusions of Biden banning fracking outright....however, it is possible that we invest enough in renewable energy that the market starts strangling fracking to death the same way it has done to coal over the last decade. Hopefully that+New and enforced regulated on the wells that exist and all that other stuff about capping unused wells and such helps a lot.

 

Undecided? In this economy?

I was surprised they even said no public land fracking. But yeah. Hopefully it’s a ruse.

 

In a year where PA isn’t the tipping point state in most models, I’d agree. But it is. And I think winning this election is paramount.

 

Correct. Most is done on private land.

Trump probably comes across better in. virtual debate where he gets muted half the time.

 

I'm really looking forward to watching a muted Trump shouting over a zoom screen.
