This is a good thing. Its important to recognize the work of the people who put this under a spotlight and worked tirelessly to make it possible. Now, public prisons.

 

Hopefully the DHS follows the DOJ and starts closing private immigration detention centers.

Hypothetically, if a write in for Harambe won with 270 electoral votes, who would be president?

 

I've read a lot of conjecture on the slippery slope of freedom of the press, for which the United States maintains a fairly high standard to be fair, and I just don't see it being obvious or imminent. How does tackling an outlet for publishing invasive and exploitative hidden video of a guy having sex and then resisting efforts and even federal court injunctions to take down the content on the basis of newsworthiness endanger substantive information being published by outlets?

Making Thiel the crux of this case is silly considering, even in the absence of funding, Hogan's legal case against Gawker was strong. It's not like Thiel was able to buy a verdict which might otherwise be unavailable, and the case did not set any new precedent. Gawker wasn't bankrupted by Thiel allowing Hogan to prolong the case and drain Gawker's money (as is being portrayed, and as is usually the case in rich people steam rolling opponents in court)-- they were found guilty and court-ordered to pay millions of dollars.

So, I feel pretty philosophically sound proudly saying Fuck Gawker.

EDIT: Also, I'm not attacking you, nor do I even know if you share that guy's opinion.

I like this one quite a bit too.

 

Bad day for crappy companies. Good day for everyone else tho.

 

Man, imagine having to explain to your kid that you're poor now because you lost all your money betting on prisons to lock people up.

 

None of this is wrong, but on the opposite side you still have Thiel, who is a pretty repugnant individual with far more influence than Gawker ever had, pushing through and enabling the case solely because of a grudge that didn't hold much water. Disliking Gawker doesn't mean supporting him, of course, but it's not much to celebrate either in my opinion. A media outlet that ran bad content sometimes definitely isn't any worse than a shitty, slimy plutocrat who'd probably be on the other side of this issue if it concerned anyone other than him.
