"Amsterdam" is still so good! One of those early 2000s minor radio hits that really holds up.

A bunch on here that I had thought about. Tunnel of Love, The Wild Hunt, Wildflowers, and American Slang were all definitely in the conversation.

Biggest surprise for me is A Brief Inquiry is above I like it when you sleep. I thought the latter was your album of the 2010s.

Haha I feel like for the most part my list is pretty boring tbh. There are a lot of pre-2000 albums that I absolutely love (e.g. Graceland, Rubber Soul, Can't Buy A Thrill), but at the end of the day my listening habits are so intrinsically tied to discovering and categorizing newer music that outside of my absolute all-timers (Dylan, Springsteen, etc) I'm just not revisiting those older albums very frequently. It's hard for me to justify Tusk or Tapestry when I've listened to them like one time this year.

A Brief Inquiry surpassed I like it when you sleep for me by the beginning of 2019. Every song on that album clicks into place in a way that is impossible for me to disconnect from where I was and how exciting of a time it was to be a fan of that band. I love how it sonically represents the conflicted, refracting prism of Matty's life philosophies. The lyrical and musical swings that they took paid off across the board without coming off as costuming or experiments, because there's this momentous, intangible insistence at the album's core that everything is going to Cohere and Mean Something. I like it when you sleep has a few of my absolute favorite 1975 songs ("If I Believe You", "Paris", "A Change of Heart") and it's a world that I'm happy to live in for 80 minutes at a time if my fiancé wants to put it on. Ultimately I reach for ABI ~70% of the time when I want to listen to the band, and the other 30% these days is Notes.

Here's my top 100 albums of the 2010s list that I pulled together kind of haphazardly at the top of the year. I didn't do as much with it as I wanted to, and I should've used the bias sorter to rank because looking now there are clear inconsistencies between that and the above list. For example, The Wild Hunt definitely got a bump because it's October.

I've definitely made a point of trying to revisit older albums more frequently--not just the stuff I'm not as familiar with, but also the albums I've loved from over the years that maybe fell out of rotation after I made a year-end list. It's so easy just to be like "There's so much new music, I could just listen to albums from this year and nothing else," which I definitely was guilty of back around 2015-17. Pulling back from that a bit has helped me delve more into catalogs of artists I really respect who I maybe don't have a clear favorite album from for a list like this (Tom Petty is a great example).

I go back and forth on my favorite 1975 record. I think there's a reasonable case for any of the first three. You know my opinion on Notes, haha

And I don't think I ever saw your decade list! Looking forward to looking through and pulling out some stuff I may have missed.

I listened to Left and Leaving by The Weakerthans, as I'd seen them pop up in a bunch of lists, and I sort of recognised the name. I think I might have listened to it before years back, but I don't really remember it. It kind of sounds like a few other Indie Rock meets Punk Rock bands, or a classic "mature" punk album - like Jets to Brazil or something. I can definitely see that bands like the Hotelier like them, and a lot of modern emo seems like they've taken a bit from them. From a song standpoint there was nothing here that really wow-ed me, but the lyrics were good and the instrumentation was very nice. Didn't blow me away, but enjoyed it enough throughout, and would probably check out another record sometime.

The lead singer's voice reminded me so much of the guy from The Dismemberment Plan that I had to Google it twice just to make sure he actually wasn't. Didn't love his voice to be honest.
