The all-time weirdest example of an arthouse director making a mainstream film will always be David Lynch's The Straight Story.

Jaws is probably the most notorious film with a rough production. It is a very Hollywood story, full of adversity and doubt only for it to become one of the most successful and influential films of all time.

The most interesting would be Aguirre, though. Werner Herzog tried to burn down Klaus Kinski's house to kill him until Kinski's dog stopped him. Later Herzog pulled a gun on Kinski when he tried to walk off set.

Werner Herzog is a fascinating person. He just barely missed a flight where everyone died, he was shot during an interview and kept going, and then about a week later he saved Joaquin Phoenix from a car accident.
