this isn’t a list of “artists you look up most to.” most of the annals of music and, like, the world are littered with horrible people. idk. i’m good with not doing this if people are gonna be weird about it. seemed like a fun idea people were into at first but i guess it was inevitable it would get ruined.

let me know what people want to do

i should have just made it people PM me lists instead of publicly posting them. that was dumb on my part. i should have seen this very likely scenario playing out.

  4. For what it's worth, I still want to see what the final list ends up being, even though I'm sure 45+ of my 50 albums won't be on it, haha.

I'm still working on mine. I'll still post it here. Anyone with an issue can take it up with me as they will.

Do what you will with it. I hope we make the list and tabulate people's submissions.

it'a an internet music list, pat. you can't not do it.

  7. It's hilariously over engineered. I'd share the formula but it's kinda confusing. Depending on how many people contribute it will be a lot of data entry for someone. I'd need a spreadsheet formatted like this:

    Screen Shot 2020-09-30 at 9.27.46 AM.png

Artist - Album and then each cell after is the position the album appeared on each individual list. The list of albums can be in any order and I can sort them after, just have to make sure there's no duplicates. I should be able to plug that into it with little work after.

First attempt at my top 50 and I listed 53 albums. Not bad. Hard part is ranking them now.

If this list is to get posted anywhere in a public capacity, it’s the obligation of everyone who participated in it to respect those who have been abused by the abusers and to not give those abusers any more positive attention. Which this list is.
Things like being an anti masker is definitely not in the same ballpark and can be up to the poster but I can’t believe the amount of people backing up BN in here rn.

My first pass, where I thought I was making really brutal cuts, was 149 albums. Whoops.

I think at its core, if people are being upfront right now and saying "hey, there's problematic artists on my list and I don't condone the things that they say/have done; however, their albums still mean a lot to me and it would feel weird/dishonest if they were not included on my list", then I don't really see the need to shame them for picks that you don't agree with.

If we're boiling it down to "you included harmful artists on your list and therefore this website is not as 'woke' as it says blah blah blah" then I don't feel like doing this. A conversation can be had.

Personally, I don't feel comfortable including an artist like Brand New. I agree with @alina that it would be a disservice to the survivors of Jesse's abuse to give them any sort of cred.

I'm torn about Kanye. I'm torn about other "classic" artists. Gonna need to sit with the list a little longer.

A lot of the last few pages feels like "brand new is problematic, don't include them, but any other band or artist with issues is fine." I understand that this site started with the genre that band came from, so they are more prominent, but only a handful of replies have addressed "problematic artists" as a whole, and what that entails.
