  1. Trump's going to use a line about how he's smart to reduce his tax bill and say Joe's accountants are lazy or something

Yeah I mean people forget that an enormous portion of Trump's base, if not nearly all of them, despise paying taxes and probably think he's a genius for figuring out how to avoid letting the federal government rob him of his hard-earned income.

That's what I'm saying though... The conservatives/libertarians/non-voters here don't care if they've been trying to get it passed for years because we have yet to have a presidential candidate commit to it. They know that Obama had the chance to do something and he still refused. That perception is all that matters unfortunately. Even after I explain it to these people they still defer back to the fact that the nominee doesn't care about it.

Dems have a bad reputation in these areas. I believe if a conservative ever runs on legalization they have a much better chance at winning those non-voters/third party voters for the long term than dems. This would seal those areas red for years to come. If a dem candidate finally commits I believe they have a much better chance at fixing their reputation turning those areas more moderate for the future.

I feel like it's pretty easy to sit in a legal state and say it's not a big issue but a lot of people I talk to here in conservative/illegal states, young and old, are sitting this election out. I know if either trump or biden came out in favor they'd win those votes. I believe this because I've seen many of them vote for Gov Laura Kelly because of her support for medical legalization.

The half-assed take that Biden has on it now just turns people away because he comes off as another fake dem lying to get votes.

These anecdotes aren't backed up by the data. About 2/3 of the electorate are supportive of some kind of legalization, it's a relatively bipartisan split, and Dems are seen by a good margin as the more progressive on the issue. It's not really an issue that changes large, electorally significant, people's minds about who they vote for, especially this year.

And we did have presidential candidates commit to it -- one is now the vice president nominee and all the others got their asses kicked by the current nominee.

I'm saying it's not a big issue in this election because I've studied the polling on it in the three or four states with specific demo groups that are going to determine the election, and it's not. Anecdotes are anecdotes, but there's not much data that legalization is a key issue in this election (let alone one that will flip votes). In other years, maybe, but not this year.

As someone who lives in a legal state, I absolute hate how fucking bullshit it is and completely overpriced the market. It was supposed to bring prices down and get rid of the black market. It has done zero for that here in Michigan, its cheaper and in some cases safer to purchase your wares from the caregiver side of things.

Don't even get me started on how Illinois and Ohio tax their wares, I think the tax goes up significantly the higher "potency" the product is. Then you have extra taxes for concentrates and oil.

It is absolutely insane how we continue to fuck up how we regulate markets and its especially noticeable in a new market where a few rich people can push the laws that support them.

Completely understand the convivence but the guy who delivers to my house who is not legal and more operating in the grey market is significantly cheaper and safer then the products sold in the dispensaries. So many places get popped for dirty goods here.

Not to mention the fact that with the potential federal Delta 8 ban that is going to jack up prices in the oil carts.

This is why we are home schooling both our kids right now. They're both really young but at no point in any of the discussions or meetings about opening school did anyone even bother to pretend that it was safe. The gist of it came down to it is impossibly hard to actually put in place and enforce even the barest of safety measures so they're just not even really gonna try. They ended up with a bunch of half-hearted, watered down safety measures that still put all of the children and anyone working in the school buildings at huge risk with the double whammy of actually pinning the blame and responsibility for any outbreaks onto the staff who are literally in an impossible situation. If and when a safe vaccine is readily available we'll think about sending them back.

I’m not even really arguing that it’s a problem for this election specifically because there’s obviously too much going on for something as small as this to be a major point of contention.

I’m just saying that it’s a problem when the dems are supposed to be the progressive party yet the face of the party refuses something that the majority of the country and even the rest of their party wants. That then reenforces their bad reputation (fake, elite, pandering, etc) and drives people away even when the other option is so clearly bad. It would just be an easy way to score votes right now and soften up that reputation in the long run.

If a gop candidate finally comes around to it then that will be perceived as just that- they’ve come around to it!. “See! They’re not as bad as the media has been saying!” Because the reputation of the Republican Party is “what you see is what you get” for better or worse.

But ultimately I guess everything I’m talking about could be implied to many others issues and not just legalization because the overall problem isn’t supporting legalization it’s the bad reputation that dems have in general...
