It is a direct influence. It is not a misinterpretation, like people thinking Scarface is cool and ignoring the entire last hour of the movie. An entire generation of D.C. staffers thinks that The West Wing is the ideal way to practice politics. It is a direct result of people believing Sorkin's vision.

It is not as if we entered a new political arena that the show could not foresee. Sorkin lived through the grotesque Presidencies of Richard Nixon and Ronald Reagan. Since Sorkin admitted to not knowing about the DNC riots until his late Fifties, it is entirely possible he really doesn't know anything about politics. That is why it is so dangerous to let someone like that set the stage for the foundation of the machinations of national politics.

We're just going to keep talking past each other. Because I agree with the bolded. But the problem is with people basing their politics on a TV show and not with the show's overly idealistic bipartisanship.

Its honestly confounding how many times I pull people aside about how often they are reported and they continue to just go about doing the same shit.

You want me to apologize and then change? I've seen people on here and no matter if I actually try doing that, like honestly and truly try, people never ever will give me the opportunity to without throwing all my past stuff in my face, so why would I bother? I made an honest to God attempt before, took time off and came back and was just replying to stuff with like video game news or helpful game suggestions and stuff, but got called out for being "Vase" because that's who I am apparently. The username will always, 100% bring up that association and there's no way to avoid that. That goes for everyone. People will always be defined as that. This isn't a woe is me, pity me post. That's a fucking useless thing to even do, but it is a post about the absolute bullshit of people wanting one thing and then when they get it, still being assholes and wanting more. You can't have your cake and eat it too.

Tell me what you expect/want me to do. I'll do it.

You will? Cause I've been saying it - stop being a dick - and you've continued to double down.

What did you expect? I've literally seen people driven out of threads on these forums because of the cliquey mindsets on here and the absolute refusal to give someone the benefit of the doubt or the time to adjust and change. Stop calling someone names and being a confrontational asshole? Yeah, I can do that. That's one of the easiest things. But legitimately changing the way I approach everything on here can be a lot tougher if I want to fit in. Can you honestly say you'd even give me a chance of redemption or whatever the hell you'd want to call it? Because I haven't seen it before.

Except for @Henry. He's actually been genuinely nice, communicative and understanding, but almost everyone else just immediately jumps down my throat or other's throats because the second they see the name "Vase Full Of Rocks" or whatever other person's name they see, they don't even try to think differently. The reflex of just thinking "oh it's, Vase, that asshole" or whatever doesn't just go away.

So I'll do it. I'll be the nicest person you've ever seen on here and I'll be genuine, but I fucking guarantee you it won't make enough of a difference because people like you don't even attempt to give a shit.

People like me? Bro this is like the first time I've interacted with you, what lol. You were an asshole to multiple people, even when you were blatantly wrong, and instead of admitting fault, you doubled down multiple times. This has nothing to do with me and everything to do with how you act. So maybe change that and people will change how they respond to you.

South Park is an interesting example for several reasons. They are much more explicit about their message than most shows, and there are examples of both proper interpretation and misinterpretation.

There was a long stretch of time where I had to hear bad jokes about how gingers have no souls at every party or get together. It was from South Park, but it was a misinterpretation of the episode; Cartman is the villain, and he immediately learns the error of his ways when the other kids convince him he is a redhead. I cannot blame South Park for that, as there are numerous examples of people missing the point.

However, there are multiple times where there message was interpreted correctly, and many of those messages were harmful. Another poster brought up the transgender episode; the episode literally compares gender confirmation surgery to trying to become tall and Black or to become a dolphin. The point of the episode is clear; accept who you are. This is Parker and Stone deliberately pushing out a hateful and cruel message. There are other examples, as well; people complaining about second hand smoke should mind their own business (although it is the smokers pushing their lifestyle on others), people who drive fuel-efficient vehicles are just doing it for status (it wouldn't matter if they were), the rainforest isn't worth protecting because South America should focus on its own poverty (both can be done). Team America does depict how American imperialism is destructive and creates more enemies, but it spends more time criticizing celebrities for having naive views about global dictators. One is far more important than the other, but that is not the message the movie pushes.

I'm really glad that we had this conversation and you legitimately proved my point by not answering any of my questions and avoiding anything you didn't want to address. Also, we have interacted before and it's been fine, but thanks for remembering.

Goddamn between the implosion in here with Vase and cmoney’s meltdown in the video game thread last week or whatever that I just caught up on I don’t even need to turn on Netflix to be entertained this week. Holy hell.

and Vase and cmoney are definitely the same person lol. There were a few Vase lines that were almost identical to cmoney, which were fresh in my head since I just read his self-destruction tale. Wild.

To get back to Sorkin, I still absolutely love Moneyball (perfect) and Steve Jobs (nearly perfect).

The worst thing Sorkin has done is The Newsroom, and I say that with confidence despite seeing only two clips: the infamous "we are not number one" speech from Harry from Dumb and Dumber, and the airplane scene when everyone finds out Osama bin Laden was killed.
