They do bury the melody in the abrasiveness in the verses a bit but you're right. That one has a hook.

 

No matter how often I swing back to Pretty Hate Machine, I'm always surprised at how funky it is.

 

a lot of the beauty of NIN comes from the hooks but, gotta admit, they aren't one of my favorite bands bc of hooks haha. that's just not really what I'm looking for from them.

 

The Fragile is Trent’s self destructive peak

 

And All That Could Have Been is one of the best live records/DVDs, and he was strung out on dope that whole time. Wild.

 

wild, I love Broken and can’t imagine thinking it’s tuneless haha. even happiness in slavery has that funky hook in it

What’s the best nin album if I’ve never heard one?

Downward Spiral is a classic for a good reason

 

seeing them play downward spiral in its entirety for the first time ever was insane

 

I saw them on the co-headliner with Soundgarden back in like 2014 and was blown away. I’m more of a casual NIN fan but they were unreal live. Hesitation Marks is a solid album, listened to it quite a bit after seeing them.

I might have not proceeded if I heard PHM first ngl, but I was also 15 and an idiot. I wish I liked that record more today but I sadly do not.

The Downward Spiral is the one imo if you want to hear the most radical shit Trent was capable of as a songwriter. With Teeth is the one if you want a more accessible and rock-centric introduction. The Fragile is long as fuck which may be a deterrent but was my real introduction and was my favorite for a long time. it’s incredibly... classically constructed I wanna say. lots of motifs, lots of callbacks and some songs are literally just different takes on other tracks you’d already heard and it all makes for a very cinematic experience. I do think it could have been spared a couple tracks, personally, and nowadays the extremely unique and inhuman sounding approach off the soundscaping and songwriting and production of TDS just appeals slightly more to me (and I really do mean slightly).

All I know about NIN is Renzor is a great composer and Johnny Cash's version is better.

 

Nothing I’ve heard from them has made me want to listen to more.
