It's so wild to hop between different communities and see how varied the reactions are. This one definitely seems to be vibing the most with it.

    hmmm

This is the most instantly positive all round reaction I've seen to a Deftones album since at least Diamond Eyes.

Yeah there’s a “community” as a whole not digging this? Please point them out.

Not as a whole (whereas Gore got shredded in a ton of places, justifiably), just varying levels of mixed. Mostly subreddits, various music people I follow, etc. I don't think there's one that's wholly negative towards it.

A Deftones group I'm in, funny enough, is definitely the most down on it.

Also I'd say KNY was widely received more positively. I think this also has a generally positive reception, but it seems that certain groups, for whatever reason, seem more down on it than others.

On a different note, I think I'm coming around to it a little more now. A day or two ago, I was just not into the record whatsoever. Now, I think I can dig four songs or so. The two singles and Radiant City, especially. This Link Is Dead is pretty cool too.

I definitely don't think im as in to it as most people here, but im hearing new things i like with every listen. Urantia and Radiant City have grown a ton. Genesis is still probably my favourite thing here, it captures the elements of the band I love better than anything else.

I've seen *some* mixed responses too. But if you're looking at any sort of numerical metric for how people overall are receiving this... it's pretty high I think. It's currently their second-highest rated album (behind only White Pony) on RateYourMusic with over 1600 ratings, and the same on Sputnikmusic. Gore doesn't even come close. I'm certainly not saying those are perfect benchmarks for how an album is received, but they do give some indication I think.

Genesis and Ohms are the most "immediate" tracks on here, besides Radiant City, so I see why there chosen as singles. This album was a lot denser than I initially anticipated, based on the singles, so it's been a lot more of a grower than I expected. I'm about 5 listens in and most of it is clicking now

I'm realizing that my wording probably wasn't great before - I don't think any place I've seen is overwhelmingly negative or anything like that, but it seems like certain pockets are vibing much more with it than others, and I'm wondering what it is that makes those pockets a little less receptive to it. KNY felt like it had a more consistent reception to it, but that also was almost a decade ago, and my memory could be wrong.

Deftones albums tend to take a long while to click for me. That said, I've listened to this twice so far and I'm very into the outro to the Spell of Mathematics. This seems more accessible than some of their other albums, but I wonder if that accessibility is gonna wear on me after I've spun the record a few more times. Kind of can't wait to find out. I have a feeling I'll be listening to it a lot this fall.

I mean you're always gonna get the people who want White Pony part 2/to a lesser extent Around the Fur part 2 and will moan about it not being quite those. That being said those types of people are taking to this album much better than Gore lol

They did a Diamond Eyes release party here in Dallas and played the record in full at a 600 cap venue. They announced it and tickets went on sale the morning of the show. Sold out in minutes. I was very disappointed.

I popped over to sharing lungs when it first leaked and it seemed to be pretty overwhelmingly positive there at that point. haven’t seen it since tho so who knows. I remember them being pretty tough on Gore and KNY, generally and relatively speaking, when they first dropped.

Don't get me wrong I think both albums are great and both gave us some essential Deftones tracks (What Happened To You? and Prayers/Triangles, imo) but there's just something missing from them. Ohms just feels so much more complete and like you said seems much more focused.

Headless is currently my favorite track but Radiant City has been growing on me like crazy. That synth part in the chorus of Radiant City is everything. I also wasn't sure about the title track as the closer to the album but hearing it in the context of the album makes me like it so much more. It's like the whole album builds to one last triumph before it ends.

yup. I would argue that not even the palpable reinvigorated energy of Diamond Eyes matches that found here. I like KNY more than DE but it’s hard to deny that DE has a v energized feeling about it that KNY (and Gore) don’t. I feel pretty comfy saying this is my favorite since S/T, and while that one is my favorite, it’s also hard to deny that it sounds more like they’re enjoying themselves, and each other, here than they were around that time. it’s really pretty special. I’m so happy we could get this out of them and I’m stoked they seem to be in a better place than ever as a unit and as individuals.

and yeah Headless is it. in an album full of memorable moments and insane highlights, the chorus of that one is the biggest one of the whole record.

Yeah I was talking to one of my friends about the album and we both pretty much agreed that Ohms is a combination of the best parts of DE and SNW. Which works for me because those are probably in my top three Deftones albums behind WP of course.

I agree that Headless has the best chorus on the whole album but Error does some pretty cool things with the melody as well. Just the whole album is them firing on all cylinders like you said. That is great to see especially after it seemed Stephen wasn’t exactly stoked about the direction that Gore took based on the interviews I read.

KNY doesn't have the DE darkness and aggression, but it makes up for it with insane hooks and atmosphere. Swerve City, Poltergeist, Tempest, Gauze... whew. B a n g e r s

This album has really grown on me a lot. It's really different and I think that threw me off initially. I think the constant "Stef is using nine strings!!" marketing made me expect something dark and aggressive as Diamond Eyes. That album is SO punishing and in your face at almost all times. This feels sludgier, so I guess my expectations of "heavy" were just different.
