It’s all about the variation in those repetitions. Prince and Daft Punk are really good at riding a groove for a long time but making subtle switches so it never sits still

 

Repetition is good as long as I don't mind what's being repeated.

this isn’t a bad opinion so it really doesn’t belong here but the downward spiral is maybe the most timeless album I’ve ever heard. maybe not my favorite, but it will never not sound like it came from some other fucked up timeline (hard to imagine one more fucked than this rn but I digress) to me.

I probably listen to With Teeth more but The Fragile remains my favorite.

 

i love that heavily-influenced-by-ministry's-twitch-but-also-prince sound

 

i mean they don’t have a bad album. one of the best bands in our lifetime.

 

The Fragile used to be my favorite but TDS is hands down his best record imo idk I can’t feel any other way anymore. I listened to it the other night in nice headphones and it’s been the better part of a decade since I have done that (arguably never re: the nice headphones part lol). it’s an absolute masterpiece. The Fragile is close but I don’t love moments like Even Deeper or Where Is Everybody very much and I feel like the first disc is noticeably stronger as a stand-alone work than the second disc. With Teeth is third, hard to judge it on the same scale as the aforementioned two tho simply bc those are such grand statements and to me With Teeth is an almost antithesis of that in the best way way. beyond that my ranking is a bit murky but the band is incredibly consistent. I lowkey am a PHM hater tho tbh.

the songwriting approach on TDS is just so radical to me honestly. it’s a little more.... familiar, for lack of a better word, on the following records overall. which isn’t a bad thing by any means, more a preference thing on my end I guess.

It's just so tuneless!

He usually knows how to blend aggression and melody in a way few non-metal acts ever have. But he leaned too far to one side there.

 

Still just as relevant now as it was then too

 

I would straight up give him the business on that.

 

“Wish” and “Gave Up” are two of the hookiest songs in their library! I think the abrasiveness is the point, making it all the more impressive that he could get *any* choruses on the damn thing.
