I think I settled into my music taste in my teens. I have gotten into more stuff in my 20s, but the original core remains.

I'm in my 30s and I don't really connect with a lot of the modern rappers and the general sound outside of the grimy boom bap Griselda type stuff which is kinda old fashioned anyway. The early 00s is my domain. The mixtape/peak Dip Set and sped up sample Heatmarkerz/Just Blaze/Kanye type beats era.

For me it’s on a case by case basis and some years are better than others

I wouldn't say any of them are really groundbreaking, but then neither is TPAB. Big Fish Theory & Acid Rap maybe for mixing in various forms of dance music without making it sound like watered down EDM rap. Whack World too maybe for fitting so much into so little time. But the others are just similes of what is already out there, just done a hell of a lot better.

And Awaken My Love is just a Funkadelic album haha

Agree with this. Got a lot of people interested in that style of lo-fi rap that the likes of MIKE and co were doing and helped them break out too.

I'd also say that that particular style of rap is groundbreaking in a way. There's always been lo-fi style beat tapes from Dilla and Madlib influenced producers, but this style is like an amalgamation of those tapes, the slowed down chopped & screwed sound of DJ Screw & his imitators and a bit of tape manipulation ambient.

Yeah not the hugest Travis fan but he held his own on that and the features blended in a kind of chaotic but smooth way, and the beat bangs

Nice to hear Travis both rapping and producing again, I hope his next album is more like Days Before Rodeo like that seems to indicate

Will have a listen of that later.

Action Bronson's new one is standardly great. Normal Bronson subject matter (sports, food, 90's pop culture etc) and his beat selection is still super fun. You know what you're getting and it's bloody great.

What are the production credits on the Bronson joint? All one producer or is it a mix?

A mix. Alchemist, Samiyam, DJ Muggs, a couple from Daringer, a couple from Harry Fraud and a few others. All typical Action beats. Doesn't sound disjointed like say Mr Wonderful was. Even though I still like that a lot, you could tell it was his first with multiple producers and suffered a little because of it.

You wouldn't know this new one isn't one producer. At this point, I think everyone he works with knows what he likes and what sound he works well with. Samples from obscure records from around the world with the odd occasional sax solo haha
