Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice (Zack Snyder, March 25th, 2016) Movie • Page 22

  1. If you take away the whole explanation of what Lex is trying to do during that scene, it's funny because it makes it seem like, "Oh hey! Your mom is named Martha too?! Small world. Ok, I'll stop beating you up. Let's be buds and save your mom together now. Sorry for setting you back a few minutes. My bad." That's what went through my mind at least. And I guess I wasn't the only one who thought that.

The Martha thing doesn't bother me whatsoever. The far bigger issue is the bullet Lois is investigating. There's zero reason or explanation for why Lex manufactured and gave them special bullets to use. Also, not sure why everyone thought Superman killed those people when they were littered with bullet holes, but that's a little more forgiving.

I like the intention of the "Martha" line but it plays as a thin reason for all the resentment and rage Batman had been holding onto for the whole film to suddenly wash away.

I think I would have really loved the Batman/Superman fight if Superman just didn't fight back at all. If he just tried to talk to Batman because his mom is in danger, and Batman was just knocking him around and Superman was pleading and raising his arms and Batman was so consumed by rage, then maybe the Martha line plays out, and then it's been led to with some actually emotional action. As it stands, it comes after these two angry guys were hitting each other. The heart should have shone through a little more. Superman is trying to save his mom. He needs Batman. I wish he had come at it from a less violent/angry angle.

@Nathan I think that would've worked better. I wish we had seen Superman try a little harder than showing up and not really pleading his case until he was hit with krpytonite

So if you change the scene in your mind that makes the movie bad/funny?! That makes no sense to me. This movie has enough problems and then you're imagining more up? haha.

@Letterbomb31 When I scrolled up the page and saw the school bus in a YouTube clip, without reading your post for some reason my head went straight to Simon Birch and I instantly got really sad

  7. Well, I mean, if I was the only person saying these things, that'd be one thing. The fact that it's a meme now shows that it was a problem within the movie because lots of people found it to be humorous/weird. And I agree, that wasn't the biggest problem in the movie.

Agreed, that kind of emotional vulnerability would be really powerful amidst the Zack Snyder aesthetic of dark, huge, aggressive action. Of course, it would also require Zack Snyder giving a character a moment of emotional vulnerability, which... isn't quite something he has a history with.

So you don't think it's possible for a group of people to take a scene completely out of context just to make fun of it? And then people see the meme before they see the movie and allow that to influence them when they finally do watch the movie?

Did you read that article I had posted about Supergirl telling a better Superman story? It touches very briefly on this. But I just felt like, and it could've been Cavill's performance or the direction received or the script, but Superman just felt very hollow and almost robotic. I get that he's not human, but it felt emotionless.

I saw it but haven't read it, I don't like to read pieces about things I haven't seen and I haven't started Supergirl yet. I haven't even started the Flash, of the DC TV shows I've only seen like, the first season of Arrow. But everything I've been hearing about Supergirl has warmed my Super-family loving heart and I'm looking forward to when I'll be able to watch it.

I'll defend Cavill, I think he is given just the most dour, empty Superman ever written for film and that's hard to bring to life no matter who you are.

I've been reading a book of critical analysis of George Clooney's acting career and you know what, I think he could have been an incredible Superman.

That's fair. Supergirl seems to handle/deal with a lot of the things people were wishing cinematic Superman was being confronted with and such. And it's not without it's problems, but the last half of the season has really been great. Melissa Benoist is great in the role.

I haven't seen Cavill in anything besides this and MoS, so I'm trying not to "blame" him. But even with someone who acts the living shit out of a poorly written role, I still don't think I'd enjoy Snyder's Superman

  14. That's definitely possible. But I saw this movie for the first time lastnight without hearing or seeing anything about that particular part. So maybe some people jumped on that train and ran with it, but I didn't know it was a meme until this morning. But either way, I thought it was silly out of context, and others did too. That's all. No reason to dwell on it.

There were lots of actual problems with the movie though. I agree with the whole bullet side story being completely useless. The movie didn't explain a lot of things as much as they should have. It was almost like a really long trailer showing the story with full fight scenes added in. I also didn't care about the characters at all. I didn't even feel any emotions (to avoid spoilers) at the end of the movie. I thought Lex was a little too psychotic crazy and not enough spoiler rich kid. Also, I felt like it was more of a Bruce Wayne movie than a Batman movie. And jesus, how many times are we going to have to see Batman's origin?! Gaaaah! And on that note, why would they show Batman's, but not Superman's origin? We don't need to see that anymore either, but I thought that was odd that they'd show one and not the other.

Anyway, I liked this movie much more than Man of Steel. But I still stand by the fact that there isn't a great Superman movie yet. And this was definitely not as good as any of the previous 3 Batman movies.

I think script and direction were the biggest problems because both MoS and BvS have brief moments where Cavill's ability to be a great Superman claw from behind the wall of Snyder. Off the top of my head, I'm thinking of Clark's scene with his mother in MoS after the Zod attack.

It just seems like a really silly criticism though. You could do that to literally any movie. Taking scenes out of context and then making fun of them doesn't constitute fair criticism imo...

Why would they show Superman's origin again when we just had Man of Steel 3 years ago?

I just figured that they wanted to re-establish Batman's origin for DC's cinematic universe, especially seeing that Martha is crucial to the film's climax.

  18. But I mean, I don't think anyone who is pointing that specific part out is taking it too out of context. It was supposed to be one of those "You and I aren't so different afterall..." kind of moments.

Touche. But there's really no need to show Batman's origin anymore.

I definitely see it crossing the $1B mark, even with the criticism and what not I honestly don't see how it won't.

I'm really hoping it does cross it. It would have to slow down quite drastically for it not to, considering it hasn't been out for a full week yet.

On looks alone the guy is top notch. I'd love to see him in a better written Superman role

With all the hate it's getting and the fact it will more than likely hit that number is a great thing. It helps that the movie has Batman who is probably the most popular superhero if not in the top 3.

Yeah, personally I loved the movie, but then again, I can easily see how a lot of people would not as well. Just preference. Does seem like the critics were pretty harsh though, so I'm definitely hoping the box office numbers continue to rise.
