I like the idea of being aware of Borat but not knowing that it's a character

Younger adults probably don't know Borat. If you are 22 in 2020 you would have been a little kid when it released. Even so, the people who still remember it are probably people who were older teenagers or young adults at the time.

I started the original Star Trek yesterday. I was so confused that there were all these different characters in the pilot.

 

Paul Verhoeven must have the world record for expanded universe stuff that misses the point of the movies he made.

I watched the original Blues Brothers film today. I hadn't seen it since I was a kid, and my appreciation for the music is very different now. It is still a great film and a loving tribute to their musical influences. It is so committed to its corny premise that it becomes endearing. I forgot how bad some of the musicians' acting is, though. The guitar player Steve Cropper always looks into the camera and delivers his lines like it was the first time he saw them. It reminded me of celebrity cameos in the Scooby Doo cartoon.

There is also a playfulness you don't really see anymore. The film continually plays with logic and continuity and doesn't care as long as it feels good and entertains. I assume the sequel will be as disappointing as its reputation.

 

That Blues Brothers ends with an incredibly long, high quality car chase at the end is the stuff of legends. How many action films of the time had anything close to that?

 

At the time it held the record for the most destroyed cars in a movie.
