The problem with this is it isn't "supposed misogyny" or "alleged misogyny"- the lyrics are misogynistic whether you're prepared to accept that or not. Why do you need to be neutral about that?

    hmmm

Whether you like it or not, people still debate whether that album's misogynistic and whether misogyny is the right term to use. I simply framed it that way as a point of formality.

And On the Waterfront, to a waaaaay less horrifying degree

Yeah Waterfront is different because the underlying message can be completely removed from the film and it still holds up

Yeah. It's also not so vociferously a defense of McCarthyism as trying to explain why he did what he did, I feel like

Jazz is really underappreciated these days, many love the elements. but not many are appreciative of the source.

Influential in a technical and artistic sense, awful in an ideological sense. It's not usually as obvious as a case like Birth of a Nation but it's pretty common I think

One reason I'm thankful for streaming services, I can pick a jazz (or any other genre) station and listen to it for hours and find something new.

I've listened to that glassjaw record a bunch. Usually lyrics are the last thing that I think about when listening to a record unless the artist is renowned for it.

Didn't realize it was saying shitty stuff, will avoid in the future.

I don't even think the two are connected. If you're inspired by Glassjaw guitar playing but hate their messages you can still adapt that instrumental influence into your own music without even at all promoting misogyny. I think film was a good counterexample because a lot of the influence from old movies is like, camera angles and fades from scene to scene haha, maybe they'll learn how to organize the plot, set the scene, without even considering what that movie was about.

The reason I make the distinction is because this logic could end up discrediting LOADS of classic music from when this country wasn't as aware of the abuse it spread through its stereotypes/cultural roles. While that doesn't excuse society back then we can't exactly act like music now is a blank slate that would exist in its current form if older music were just, thrown out of validity from popular culture.

It's two unfortunate sides of a coin. Positive influence from music is often subtle, indirect, and derivative, but it also helps build the backbone for new innovations. Meanwhile, negative influence has more direct implications, like, it's very morally disturbing to promote an album like that that can actually influence listeners, especially younger ones, to adopt those views.

The music wasn't misogynistic until lyrics were added to it, and I feel like the songcraft that came before the actual purpose of the song has value in itself that is entirely separate from the words that are recorded on too. It stimulates a different part of your brain that doesn't even process interpersonal thought.

So you don't like being insulted but it's okay for Glassjaw to be openly misogynistic and offensive to women on EYEWTKAS? That's interesting.

You're still yet to acknowledge that EYEWTKAS contains misogynistic lyrics though. Describing the lyrical content as involving "supposed misogyny" and "alleged misogyny" isn't an acknowledgement, it's pretty much a denial at this point. I just find it problematic when dudes like you struggle to recognise blindingly obvious misogyny in art they like. I think the only reason you're claiming to be "neutral" (whatever the fuck that means) is because you think it's a more honourable position to take than just outright admitting you don't think the album is misogynistic.
