The histrionics I'm seeing from some other non-Black band dudes about cancel culture over this... sigh. This is exhausting.

I think Courtney said it best.

 

Imagine being a black twenty one pilots fan and dude can't even make a passing reference to black lives, the closest he got was "I respect all the warriors out there fighting for different causes" like holy geez

 

The argument people are using to defend him is that he doesn’t have to speak on social/political issues or things he’s not comfortable speaking about, but if that’s the case then just stay completely silent and don’t mock people asking you to speak out. Also, we are in the midst of one of the biggest civil rights movements in the world, one of the most important elections, and a global pandemic that has killed hundreds of thousands of people and is being handled absolutely horribly, which we have never been in all at the same time. THAT is why people want him to speak up so much. Literally every other major musician has said at least something. Them not saying anything just looks bad more than anything.

 

yea exactly you can't play that "he doesn't HAVE to speak if he's uncomfortable" card when he decided to post a joke about it, it doesn't work like that. Also apparently he can take a tweet to support Pride Month (which yay nice cool) but not one to support black lives?

 

I think he’s poking directly at the “he doesn’t have to say anything about his
views” opinion people have than anything about his own actual views.

Would it be cool if he said something progressive for the culture? Of course. Would it be better if he didn’t post anything at all? In this case, yes. Reading the room should be taught to him by his PR team.

 

It’s like he’s trying to emulate Ryan from The Office.

Full disclosure: Not trying to downplay the situation by any means. It’s super fucked up what he said and how he’s using his platform. But this was the first thing I thought of after reading that.

I'm a big TOP fan and this is really disappointing. His tweets just seem so super weird, like he's trying to apologise but then decides to double down instead?

 

He's clearly having some sort of episode cause-- this is not how a rational person behaves, wtf.

 

Let’s not make any sort of excuse for him. Plenty of people are just shitty human beings.

 

I'm not saying it to defend him, I just legitimately don't know why anyone would go out of their way to actively hurt their marginalized fans.

Sometimes it really is that simple, like idk why everyone has to always become amateur detectives or armchair psychiatrists whenever someone famous does something shitty.

 

It’s natural to wanna see the best in people or give the benefit of the doubt, but sometimes you gotta call a spade a spade.

 

Yeah, they've been pushed for years to advocate for their LGTBQ base and be vocal about issues surrounding them and it's always been a generic "Let love rule! Be aware of your mental health" type stuff. As said, it is a very privileged "Rich, white Christian guys from Columbus that don't want to upset their conservative base" type of mindset and they finally showed their full ass yesterday.

 

has nothing to do with music but a local brewery here is undergoing pretty much the exact same scrutiny, a while back they posted the standard blackout pic on instagram to support BLM but then like 2 weeks ago made some post about how they support their local community police and first response and made donations to them and people were like "you can't play neutral with this, you cant say you support BLM and then the next day donate to the police" lol and they just kept being like "Why cant we all love eachother and be happy". extremely tone deaf white folk lets all hold hands and love eachother shit.

 

I can't read Tyler Joseph's tweets as anything other than intentionally trying to piss people off/play victim. The "but now I see there is no room for that right now" comment sucks any good will I could give him right out the window. That's not at all what was said and he knows it.
