I think I appreciated them more as an angsty youth.

I tried so hard to get into The Upsides when it dropped, and they never clicked. I don’t think they have any interesting hooks

I think I continue to like them about as much as I always did. They're good. Distinctive lyrics that are unique to them. Good intensity. But there's a ceiling on what they can do/some limitations.

  5. I tried really hard to get into TWY multiple times due to years of endless hype about them on here. There was like a week in 2013 where I thought The Greatest Generation was finally gonna turn me, but the moment passed quickly. There There, Dismantling Summer, and Teenage Parents are the most I've liked songs of theirs

Googled it and was not disappointed:

TWY came after all the best poop punk bands, took the style and did nothing with it. Their early stuff was fun, but never really did anything exciting or new with the genre. Then the latest album tried to step away from that and it was terrible haha

i'm not even gonna change it haha. TWY took what was shit out from pop-punk and made it their own, there ya go

They were always fine with zero innovation in the genre, but performing the least common denominator version well. Which is fine, but I always wished they did more

Should be clear that it was aimed at the bands and not you. :-p

Since I'm in here, I'm gonna say I think The Maine are bad.

Lovely Little Lonely is a good album but I find everything else to be irredeemably awful shite. The early stuff is the neon era personified and for that it should be fired into the sun. The second, third and fourth album are just different flavours of 5/10 bland. The last album was just a mess.

    Sorry.

Also I did not realise "Get in the sea" was only a British term.

  19. Crazy to me that one could like Lovely Little Lonely and dislike both American Candy and You Are OK that much, but yeah LLL is definitely their best work

American Candy is probably the other one I think is the most ok. The last one I genuinely had to pause several times because I disliked it so much. Which is strange cause I do genuinely like LLL quite a lot.

Maybe for me they are just a one album band where I just randomly connect with that one record, seems to happen sometimes.

I did not expect to come in here and find TWY slander and I feel very attacked rn.

I actually think Sister Cities is a superb album, but the thing that sets them apart from the other pop punk bands of their genre is the fact Dan is a far superior songwriter and lyricist to many of his peers.

The Wonder Years were kind of on the rise concurrently to The Dangerous Summer, and I just always thought The Dangerous Summer had better lyrics, better melodies, and better vocals. That might be why I never gravitated to TWY more. I remember the summer Suburbia came out, I really liked a few songs on there but every time I put on that record, I'd get like three tracks in and just want to listen to War Paint instead.

I can agree with the point that thing that sets TWY apart is the songwriting, Dan certainly has a unique way of storytelling, so lyrically I totally understand the draw there. Musically though, is where they never really were able to break out from anything somewhat generic

With better production/mixing, it's entirely possible that I'd find Dan's voice more palatable. But their records just don't sound good.
