I have also tried to explain this once. I called it theatrical lol

One of the main reasons I can't get into most 90% of pop-punk is that they all force that gruff "emotional" voice, which I guess is maybe what you guys are talking about lol but that's how I've always described it

This one is tiny and I have no idea why it bugs me but I fucking hate when pop-punk bands just assign random members to sing like one line in a song (TWY does this sometimes IIRC). Like, why did the bassist who otherwise never sings lead need to sing that one sentence

I get why SLS are getting some stick for the OTT vocal delivery (I quite enjoy the urgency in his case, think it works), but I'm a bit surprised that TWY are getting thrown under that bus. Although, my opinion on Dan's vocals changed a lot when I saw them live last year. They really don't do his voice any justice on the records compared to how he sings live.

I always think I enjoy good pop-punk but when I actually listen to it I get bored quite quickly. I rarely listen to a whole record.

Having said that, I'm currently listening to the debut Starting Line album and having a lot of fun.

I fucking hate it when I go to a show and the singer sticks the mic into the crowd to let someone else sing a line of a song. It’s especially bad at metal shows because normal people can’t scream like professional metal singers. Pisses me off every time.

I think it's become more of a problem for Dan over the course of The Wonder Years' career. I think TGG is where it becomes a big problem, because that album's subject matter is generally so heavy and he sings the songs in such a heightened way. It makes for an exhausting listen. And then I just don't think he ever stopped singing like that, which is part of the reason I cannot get into the subsequent records from that band.

It can work really well in small doses, or when it feels thematically appropriate. "Cigarettes & Saints" is an example. But on the whole, I struggle with Dan's vocals for more than a few songs in the row.

  9. I guess that explains why I only ever got into Suburbia. His vocal style fits that album's vibe, but otherwise it's just... too much. I appreciate they added more dynamics into their music afterwards, yet he seems stuck in that same over emotional delivery and it just makes me want to turn their music off.

TWY seem to split opinion quite a lot. I think they have some great songs on everything from Suburbia forward, but TGG is the only one I like from start to finish. It's also the only one which I have some attachment to, for whatever reason.

Generally though, I think the production on their records is generally pretty bad. Or at least, they seem to consistently make production choices I don't like. :crylaugh:

I love TWY, but I do find Dan's increasingly "sad boi" vocal delivery a bit of a put off across a whole record, it's just too much.

Similarly I really enjoy Spanish Love Songs but I put them on for the first time in a while recently and it's incredibly depressing. His vocals combined with those lyrics just make it such a bummer.

I feel like there's more of a balance on Suburbia with the lyrical themes (it's not all super sad) and his vocal delivery doesn't have quite as much of that emotional affectation.

My equivalent grating vocals are mid 2000's British indie. Very twee British accents like those in The Kooks, Razorlight, The Kaiser Cheifs, Kasabian, etc.

Alongside being terrible bands, the vocals really irritated me.

I think TWY only started putting out great stuff after Suburbia so I think I enjoy his more emotionally affected vocals. I think the songs where he does that are usually their best. His voice does get a bit much over an entire record though.

The one universal constant with TWY is that save for people who just flat out cannot stand them, everybody likes TGG.

I was at the end of school/start of college when all that kicked off and it boiled my piss. Absolutely hated all of it.

Was listening to the Riot Act podcast section called Broken Records where they just talk about records that are terrible, or were critically panned, and them ripping into Razorlight brought back horrible memories of hearing them all over the radio.

Also fuck Kaiser chiefs. Any band the following lyric in their biggest song just cannot be good, and that is fact

    "Television's on the blink,
    There's nothing on it
I really wanna really big coat,
    With words on it
What do you want for tea,
    I want crisps
Why don't you join the team,
    I just didn't"

Ah man. I enjoyed that first Kooks album. Granted, it wasn’t as big in the US, so I never really got the chance to get sick of it. Are we roping The Wombats into that group as well?

Also - I knew someone that worked backstage at a Razorlight show and said she saw the lead singer snort the biggest pile of cocaine she’d ever seen. That’s pretty much all I remember of them.

When I was 14 I would eat up pretty much anything that NME was peddling. Some really good shit (The Streets, Oasis, early Kings of Leon), some not so good shit (Razorlight, Kaiser Chiefs, etc).

That first Razorlight record had some bangers even if they were diet Libertines
